Seems like he put stories together
Reviewed: 07-05-24
Seems like he put two short stories together into one story. Would have enjoyed either if they were fully developed but neither were so it was just okay. Glad I didn't pay full price for this. Would not recommend this book to a friend.

About standard for this series
Reviewed: 12-31-23
This is yet another installment in the Undying Mercenaries. About on par with most of the other books in this series. Mark Boyett is very good. The story is actually a bit weak on content. A lot of exposition about things but not a lot of forward movement in the story arc overall. Not sure the author has a larger story arc in mind though. He has elements for a much larger story arc I hope he gets those going at some point. Not sure I will be interested in another book in this series if there isn't some end in sight.

Kind of your standard fair space opera. Pretty good character and world building. That part of the book didn't seemed forced. Didn't have any new or improved sci-fi technologies just used some of the same tropes to good effect. A bit too much blah blah blah in places, get to the point already. We get it. A character is going to break out of captivity. Move the story along. Don't need a detailed description about the break out. The one thing that kinda ruined the story for me was cramming in dragons. Yes, full on dragons. Seems maybe the author had some chapters written for some fantasy story but figured why not put them into this book. And looking back on the story, it could have been a sorcerer story but was put into space instead. Definitely killed 43 hours for me. I didn't feel the need to run it at increase speed to get through it.

The first book was just okay but the later books were good and got better. He does a really good job of keeping the time travel consistent. I didn't notice any paradoxes in any of the stories. I hope he writes more in this universe.

Basic Space opera
Reviewed: 09-19-23
This was pretty basic. I almost stopped listening after the first few chapters but I had a long drive and nothing else to listen to. The Narrator isn't that good but he grows on you over time. Just not quite right for the protagonist. Not many surprises or much in the way of surprising twists. Pretty much straight up. Character development was kinda weak. That is good if you don't want to have to diverge from the story much, and this doesn't diverge much. Standard warp drive, space lasers, and etc. So, no new ideas regarding space warfare. It killed 34 hours for me while I'm waiting for the books I really want to listen to, to come out. There seems to be other books from this universe out there. But I don't plan on listening to them.

This third installment was hard to get through. I can not recommend this book to anyone. Sure it is a continuation of the universe with the spiders and octopus, etc. But it is a boring story line and could have been part of a subplot of some larger story line. And maybe it is, but so tedious. This book could have been just a nice short story.

It all ends here. Every decision, battle, triumph, and heartache has led the galaxy to this moment. The Republic is spun wildly into sudden war as Gomarii slavers, in overwhelming numbers, strike on behalf of their Savage allies. The battle is fiercest on a newly rediscovered world: Earth. But galactic war is only the symptom of an older, deeper, and far more dangerous conflict. Now, Keel and Ravi must work frantically to assemble the warriors needed to withstand an ancient threat, and Prisma must wrestle to control her own inner darkness.

In this series I really enjoyed the Wraith persona of Kiel (sp?). And would have liked to have gotten more of that. But there was a good amount of Wraith although the authors seems to want to merget the Wraith and Kiel personas into a whole personality. This story really isn't about that. The most entertaining part of this whole book was Death Destroyer of Worlds. Now that is a story line I would like to see more of. I didn't think the Cromethius or Mistro story lines were good to begin with and in this book it got too much like The Matrix. Kinda ruined this book for me. In the "After Action Report" the authors said they would be exploring more of Cromethius and Mistro. Those are books I will stay away from. There are a lot of borrowed story themes in this series. And they have been played out numerous times in many different stories. The authors really need to step it up a notch. The ending was basically the end of "Lord of the Rings." The authors really should have ended the Galaxy's Edge after the first series. Seems this second series just isn't up to the same standard. I guess writing endings is hard. That is why there are so few good stories. A bad ending can ruin a perfectly good story. The ending here wasn't terrible just not really good.

Okay but not much fighting or action of any sort

This could have easily been set in the times of the British navy say the 1800's some time. There was no need to make this a scifi/space story. The threat could have been pirates or Vikings for that matter. It didn't give me enough to want to get the next installment in this story nor will I be finishing this series. Kinda of a disappointment. It started off slow and never really picked up. Seems the author was a logistic officer in some military somewhere. More logistical fiction than anything.
