Historia
Erik Wallin served with his unit in all of these locations, and provides the listener with a fascinating glimpse into these final battles. The book is written with a "no holds barred" approach which will captivate, excite, and maybe even shock the listener - his recollections do not evade the brutality of fighting against the advancing Red Army. Twilight of the Gods is destined to become a classic memoir of the Second World War.

interesting but lacking a holistic picture
Revisado: 12-30-22
Interesting listen of the exploits of a Swedish SS of volunteer. I wish it gave more of a picture of the background of this young Swede and a better understanding of why he volunteered for the SS in the first place. The most interesting part is that the end of the war when he tries to make his way home as it provides a more unique picture of him.

In this exclusive audiobook edition, which includes eight hours of new content, Snyder combines the original essays from On Tyranny with twenty new lessons that answer the questions everyone is asking about this war. With forays into history, he clarifies the causes of the Russian invasion and the meaning of Ukrainian resistance, and explains the war's connections to threats to democracy here in the United States and around the world. Linking past and present, speaking only from notes, he guides the listener into the larger moral universe of On Tyranny.

excellent summary of the war in Ukraine
Revisado: 12-11-22
Highly recommend this overview. It isn't as much a book as just a historian's view on Ukraine in 2022. it gives an excellent overview of what is happening and why.

For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.

Historia
Gunter K. Koschorrek was a machine-gunner on the Russian front in WWII. He wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on. As keeping a diary was strictly forbidden, he sewed the pages into the lining of his thick winter coat and deposited them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing, and it was when he was reunited with his daughter in America some 40 years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow.

while decidedly apolitical, this book does an excellent job telling a remarkable story of a soldier who survived for years on the eastern front. very much worth a listen.

Historia
Like many Germans, Berlin schoolboy Erwin Bartmann fell under the spell of the Zeitgeist cultivated by the Nazis. Convinced he was growing up in the best country in the world, he dreamt of joining the Leibstandarte, Hitler's elite Waffen SS unit. Tall, blond, blue-eyed, and just 17-years-old, Erwin fulfilled his dream on Mayday 1941, when he gave up his apprenticeship at the Glaser bakery in Memeler Strasse and walked into the Lichterfelde barracks in Berlin as a raw, volunteer recruit.

Mixed feelings about this book
Revisado: 05-03-22
Interesting overview of a personal story. Following the personal journey of an individual in the Waffen SS is truly fascinating and there are some remarkable stories from the war.
However, the author completely glosses over the atrocities of the SS. The only war crimes described are those of the Russians. While those are also well documented in history this story does not acknowledge any of the well known war crimes of the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler. It's completely possible that this soldier did not take part in any but his denial of even knowing about any of them does not sit well with history. There are too many events that the Leibstandarte were involved with for the author to be completely unaware of any or to express any regret for the association being part of the same unit. The author even ends the book saying he had nothing to regret.
Worth a listen but with a critical ear.

Historia
When Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill met in Yalta in February 1945, Hitler's armies were on the run and victory was imminent. The Big Three wanted to draft a blueprint for a lasting peace - but instead set the stage for a 44-year division of Europe into Soviet and western spheres of influence. After fighting side by side for nearly four years, their political alliance was rapidly fracturing. By the time the leaders met again in Potsdam in July 1945, Russians and Americans were squabbling over the future of Germany and Churchill was warning about an "iron curtain" being drawn down over the Continent.

Historia
During World War II, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia found themselves trapped between the giants of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. Over the course of the war, these states were repeatedly occupied by different forces, and local government organizations and individuals were forced to choose between supporting the occupying forces or forming partisan units to resist their occupation. Devastated during the German invasion, these states then became the site of some of the most vicious fighting during the Soviet counterattack and push towards Berlin.

interesting book with lots of great history and very well researched. however it isn't clear if it's more about the baltics or the military history and ends up jumping between the two without always making clear connections.

Historia
This is the strange and fascinating life of Erwin Rommel, from his days as a youth in Imperial Germany - when he had a child out of wedlock with an early girlfriend - through his lauded military exploits during World War I to his death by suicide during World War II, after he attempted a failed coup against Hitler. Rommel was a man of contradictions: a soldier who wrote a best-selling book about World War I, a commander who went from commanding Hitler's bodyguard to trying to kill him, and a serious military mind who was known for participating in practical jokes.
