Lost in narration
Reviewed: 10-05-24
The narration is terrible, it’s like she is not even paying attention at all to the story. She has a “ teenage girl” narration throughout with no subtle nuances. A whisper is a shout. I am not even half way and I don’t know if I can finish. I loved the 1st book and the narration was so on point. Why did they change it!? The story is also not as gripping as the 1st book but I think if the narration was better I would’ve enjoyed it.

They are, in fact, birthday twins. A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix's children's school. Josie has been listening to Alix's podcasts and thinks she might be an interesting subject for her series. She is, she tells Alix, on the cusp of great changes in her life.

Loved the narration and the story. Both compelling! Both compelling. The story had some twists I could guess but others I never suspected. Also so well written, she really places you in every situation.

This book put a smile on my face, all the way through. Absolutely loved the story and narration. I didn't think it would be possible to take what could have been a very cliche storyline and infuse it with so fun and a sense of being human that I could easily relate to. More serious twists are dealt with in a way that shines a light on the difference that love and acceptance can make, and the characters grow and deepen, but not always in the way one would expect.

Great start but then it crashes

I loved the 1st part of the story, The Jesse Eisenberg part but then the next narrator comes on and that part of the story is cast in the future with an irritating imaginary teenage slang. The teenage voice is annoying and his story not funny or interesting enough to hold my gaze. I stopped listening halfway.

My only wish is that is was longer. Is there any more of this available? I have the book, have read it and have had it for many years. It’s complex and long and I think it’ll be difficult to do the entire book like this. For me this was a great summary and I felt like I had been to a therapy session with the wisest woman and therapist. But I want more!

Story
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

The story was good but I almost stopped listening. It felt like a novel for teens until the girls grew up and the pace quickened. The narration was good but I found it overly dramatic, as you would do when you’re reading to a child and some or the voices really sounded like animal characters form a kiddies book. Overall worth the listen.
