Story
"Chekhov is probably better known in Britain for his plays than for his prose. For many, however, it is his short stories that mark the high water of his genius. It might at first glance be hard for those not used to his style of narrative to see what the fuss is about - and fuss there is: for most authors and lovers of literature Chekhov is incomparably the greatest short story writer there ever was."

Good intro to Chekhov
- By Tad Davis on 03-15-11
Wonderful writing, abysmal editing.
Reviewed: 07-18-19
Stephen Fry’s performance is exceptional, and Chekhov’s stories are brilliant. The editing is a catastrophe. One story is barely ended, while the title of the next barrels in heedless of decency and tact. It severely disturbed my enjoyment of the work, and I am deeply displeased that Audible would allow such poor editing work to make it to its store shelf.

Story
In the midst of World War II, James is training for the Royal Air Force, while going home to Yorkshire whenever possible to see his very pregnant wife, Helen. Musing on past adventures through the dales, visiting with old friends, and introducing scores of new and amusing characters—animal and human alike—Herriot enthralls with his uncanny ability to spin a most engaging and heartfelt yarn.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The story is excellent. The narration is top notch. The editing team is a colossal failure. The end of the book got spliced into the wrong place and the last chapters are all out of order. It is a disgrace.

Story
One of the great literary classics of Western literature and the only published novel written by Oscar Wilde. The Picture of Dorian Gray created great controversy on publication because of its homosexual undertones, and was later used as evidence against him at his trial at the Old Bailey in 1895. "If it were I who was to be always young, and the picture that was to grow old...I would give my soul for that!" The wish uttered by Dorian Gray as he gazes on his portrait forms the basis of this story.

Enthralling

What made the experience of listening to The Picture of Dorian Gray the most enjoyable?
Oscar Wilde was a magnificent storyteller. The prose is rich, descriptive and thrilling.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Picture of Dorian Gray?
The very idea of the painting's power is steeped in myth and fairy tales, and is a wonderfully compelling idea for a tale of decadent decay.
What about David Brown’s performance did you like?
I loved his voice. His Oxonian tones were absolutely perfect for the style of the era and the background of the main characters.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The luxuriant decadence of erosion.
