Story
With her arrival on the music scene in the early 1980s, Madonna generated nothing short of an explosion—taking the nation by storm with her liberated politics and breathtaking talent. But Madonna was more than just a pop star. Everywhere, fans gravitated to her as an emblem of a new age, one in which feminism could shed the buttoned-down demeanor of the 1970s and feel relevant to a new generation. Deftly tracing Madonna’s story from her roots to her rise to super-stardom, master biographer Mary Gabriel captures the dramatic life and achievements of one of the greatest artists of our time.

A good listen.

Previously, I saw Madonna as a sensational singer, dancer and performer. This book, however, details many other aspects- her perseverance, values, drive, activism, philanthropy, creativity, and most of all, her artistry. She is as relevant and important as Kahlo, Van Gogh, and Picasso. I'm sure her work and life and impact will be studied for the rest of human time.

Story
From its opening scene, when hero cop Brian Remy wakes up to find he's shot himself in the head, novelist Jess Walter takes us on a harrowing tour of a city and a country shuddering through the aftershocks of a devastating terrorist attack. As the smoke slowly clears, Remy finds that his memory is skipping, lurching between moments of lucidity and days when he doesn't seem to be living his own life at all.

after completing Beautiful Ruins, which i loved, i immediately downloaded The Zero, but eventually quit listening. i got tired of talking myself into listening to more. Perhaps the style, the abrupt ending to scenes, the main character's own confusion about what he is doing, doesn't translate well to audio.

Story
Waiter to the Rich and Shameless is not just a peek into the secretive inner workings of a legendary five-star restaurant; it is not just a celebrity tell-all or a scathing corporate analysis. It is a top-tier waiter's personal coming-of-age story, an intimate look into the complicated challenges of serving in the country's most elite, Hollywood-centric dining room while fighting to maintain a sense of self and purpose.

a huge disappointment. the celebrity stories were interesting, but few in number. i could barely keep listening. Several times dozed off. The more i listened, the more i hated it. Worse chapter was towards the end when he is in italy. i didnt care about anyone in this book. what a huge downer.
