Enjoyable, but hard to follow on audio

I'm enjoying this book, but it is hard to follow on audio. I am fascinated by the details, but really need a map in front of me to fully understand the stories in the book. Every eyewitness story is identified by location in relation to the mountain, frequently with road numbers. I don't know if the paper version had a map and photos, but if it did, it would be nice to have access to them.

That being said, it's a gripping story and I'm not sorry that I'm spending so much time listening to it (at 1.2x speed, which helps!).

I rarely do not finish books, but I stopped this one with about 4 hours to go. I have really enjoyed Rai's other books, but this one just seemed flat to me. The readers were good but the story not so much. It just seemed to get more outlandish at every turn, and there was no chemistry between the main characters. I kept going with it, thinking that there would be some sparks, but they never came. Very disappointing.

Enjoyed the story but not the narrator

I did enjoy the story, but found the narrator less than stellar. The intros to each chapter that were added in the serialized version were okay to read—you could skip or skim right over them—but they were VERY disruptive to the story when you listen to the book. And that was made even worse by the ridiculous accent that the narrator used for them. They got more irritating as the story progressed. And why Gaston got the silly accent I do not know. I could tolerate that, at least, because listening to Gaston was at least progressing the story, unlike the chapter "intros."

Good story, but adaptation had some issues

I had listened to another Graphic Audio series (Ilona Andrews' Innkeeper series) and really enjoyed it. I like the Ordinary Magic series a lot, so I decided to try the GA version. The performances were fine, but the background sounds were frequently so loud that they distracted from the story. It's fine to have normal sounds (doors closing, etc.) but constant grating noise was very unpleasant, plus so loud that at parts I couldn't hear the dialog clearly.

Not the same caliber as Disloyal

I'm sorry, but this was one giant "they were out to get me!" I enjoy Cohen's podcasts occasionally and I liked Disloyal, but this book is not of that caliber. I'm trying to remember if I actually learned anything new in this book, but it's hard to say. There is a lot of repetition. I'm not convinced that what happened to Cohen is a sign that DOJ is actually that corrupted, though I certainly believe that the former guy did abuse and misuse his powers, abetted by Barr and others.

I'm sorry that Cohen didn't narrate this one, but the narrator wasn't bad, just a little over the top.

Hope Rosamund Pike narrates the whole series!

I have no problem with the Kate Reading/Michael Kramer version, but I really enjoyed Pike's reading! It adds a whole new flavor to the book, which I have read/listened to many times. Audible, you'd get another pile of credits from me if she narrates the whole series!

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. As other reviewers have noticed, the book was more centered on Mary Trump's father and grandfather and the family dynamics. The Donald was secondary (which is probably another reason I enjoyed the book so much—plus I'll bet Donald hated that part). The writing was excellent and swept me up from the first chapter, and the narration (by Trump) was good. I wish I hadn't waited so long to read the book. I'll pick up her newest book much sooner!

Truly horrific narration is ruining the book

I actually came to Audible to be sure I'm not the only one finding the narration appalling. I want to enjoy Mr. Lewis's book, as I have enjoyed his others, but the narrator is making that impossible. Her voice is almost lispy and her enunciation is truly bad. I'm having to relisten to make out some words, and there have already been several mistakes in pronunciation. It's not gender-related for me—any narrator with crisp enunciation would satisfy me.

I join other reviewers in urging Mr Lewis and Audible to have this book redone. I dislike returning audiobooks, but I don't think I can listen to much more.

I love this series, although this book is not my favorite. However, the whiny childlike voice used for the h pretty much wrecked any chance I had of enjoying it.

Also, though I've read these before (paper/ebook) and know that the basic plots will start to vary more, the basic premise that the H is strong and honest and the h thinks that all guild men are part of a giant criminal conspiracy has gotten a little old by book 5 in the series.
