Boring, bad narrator
Reviewed: 12-31-23
This is not nearly as exciting as the description made it sound. Also the narrator made every voice sound the same, and the male voices were cringey. To top it off, there wasn’t a clear or satisfying resolution to the story. Waste of a credit.

The story was okay. But the narrator kept mispronouncing words and her accents were terrible. She mispronounced Rohypnol as “rofenol.” Come on.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

This book is everything in the title. It’s not a fast-paced, gripping, or thrilling story, but it’s lovely and I looked forward to listening every day. I loved the octopus, and the narrator voiced him perfectly.

I love Molly Harper and I love Amanda Ronconi, but this book felt like a rush job for both of them. The story was trite, uninspired, and boring. I kept thinking I’d missed pages or maybe I hadn’t realized this was abridged, because parts of the plot came out of nowhere and didn’t make sense. Amanda Ronconi’s narration was actually annoying this time. Her inflections seemed arbitrary and nonsensical in places, and the voice of one character was flat out obnoxious. Really disappointing book.

I couldn’t get through this. The narrator is awful. After such vibrant, dynamic voices from the first 18 books, this narrator is SO disappointing. I wanted to listen because I love the series. But this narrator grates on my nerves. Monotone, robotic, unrealistic—all apply here. I’m incredibly sad I can’t finish the series.

The author hasn’t managed to make the main character likable. The pilot is driven by her making bad choice after bad choice—deliberately. Every page, she says “I like the cop who tells me not to go investigating—rightly so because I am interfering in police work—buuuuut I feel like doing it anyway so I will. Uhoh now I feel bad.” Give me a break! Good thing it was in the plus catalog.

Cliche after cliche after cliche. The plot is clumsy and uninspired, while also not making any sense. Like all of a sudden here’s this dude explaining away all the plot holes and it still doesn’t jibe.
The narrator wasn’t awful, but the male and female protagonists both sounded exactly the same, which was weird. She went overboard making the antagonist sound evil. Overall, not worth a credit, but maybe a $5 sale.
