Historia
When Pamela Churchill Harriman died in 1997, the obituaries that followed were predictably scathing–and many were downright sexist. Written off as a mere courtesan and social climber, her true legacy was overshadowed by a glamorous social life and her infamous erotic adventures. Much of what she did behind the scenes–on both sides of the Atlantic–remained invisible and secret. That is, until now: with a wealth of fresh research, interviews and newly discovered sources, Sonia Purnell unveils for the first time the full, spectacular story of how she left an indelible mark on the world today.

Lost steam (agreed)
Revisado: 04-05-25
The first half was very compelling, then it felt like it spun into a refrain of how she wasn’t appreciated and her value was not recognized enough.
I had not heard of her before reading this so I don’t have any pre conceived biases against her, but it felt like the book was trying to respond to criticism I didn’t actually harbor.
If there was a good ending, it was too tedious to get to.

Historia
Comtesse Valtesse de la Bigne was painted by Édouard Manet and inspired Émile Zola, who immortalized her in his scandalous novel Nana. Her rumored affairs with Napoleon III and the future King Edward VII kept gossip columns full. But her glamorous existence hid a dark secret: She was no comtesse. She was born into abject poverty, raised on a squalid backstreet among the dregs of Parisian society. Yet she transformed herself into an enchantress.

Very interesting story and content against the backdrop of an iconic era of French history.
The author does a masterful job of presenting it all with an enjoyable narrative that conveys complex personal motivations and well described history and context of French society in the late 19th century.

Historia
Today's "machine-learning" systems, trained by data, are so effective that we've invited them to see and hear for us - and to make decisions on our behalf. But alarm bells are ringing. Systems cull résumés until, years later, we discover that they have inherent gender biases. Algorithms decide bail and parole - and appear to assess black and white defendants differently. We can no longer assume that our mortgage application, or even our medical tests, will be seen by human eyes. And autonomous vehicles on our streets can injure or kill.

Revisado: 10-24-24
This was such an incredible portrayal of the advancements in machine learning by tying it to the ways humans learn.
The author, in a very relatable way, ties the development of better learning systems to our collective understanding of how humans grow and learn.
Incredibly fascinating all the way through!

Historia
As Nazi Germany launched its campaign of racial terror and pushed the world toward war, three misfits banded together to challenge Hitler’s dominance at the apex of motorsport: the Grand Prix. Their quest for redemption culminated in a remarkable race that is still talked about in racing circles to this day - but which, soon after it ended, Hitler attempted to completely erase from history.

This book was gripping from the opening passage to the very end. The narrative style of the author engagingly recounted the inspiring story as described in the title details, while intermingling a fascinating history of Grand Prix racing.
It was relatable to me as a general audience member (in no way am I a racing enthusiast)
Overall it took me about a day to finish!

Don’t be Dissuaded by Book Length
Revisado: 08-24-24
I was a little skeptical of how long the book was, even despite all of the wonderful reviews.
There was enjoyable, relevant substance all the way through and if anything it was very much my money’s worth!
A delight to hear about such an uplifting man, and in the context of such a consequential stretch of history. It’s almost glossed over as though the world’s return to normalcy was inevitable after such a destructive world war.
The details of it all were endlessly fascinating, and masterfully woven into an easily relatable narrative.

Eisenhower is a remarkable character that I was only peripherally familiar with ahead of this book.
I imagine there are many more books worth of material on him, but this one stayed focused on the war years and was compelling all the way through.

Pleasantly surprised with the added history
Revisado: 04-21-23
Was curious to learn more about Jim Thorpe, and this book certainly delivered on detailing his accolades and triumphs and provides all the context to understand how truly remarkable he was as an athlete.
Did not expect to learn so much about the early history of football and the Native American integration endeavor.
Author and narrator were superb at tackling both topics head on without sugar coating anything but also without detracting from the inspiring story of Thorpe’s athletic achievements.
