Story
Our capital city has always been a thriving and colorful place, full of diverse and determined individuals developing trade and finance, exchanging gossip and doing business. Abandoned by the Romans, rebuilt by the Saxons, occupied by the Vikings and reconstructed by the Normans, London would become the largest trade and financial center, dominating the world in later centuries. London has always been a brilliant, vibrant, and eclectic place.

Interesting survey

Although the author desires to focus on London, it seems that there may not be sufficient surviving records to provide a very detailed analysis. I did very much enjoy this nevertheless.

Story
The Magna Carta is revered around the world as the founding document of Western liberty. Its principles - even its language - can be found in our Bill of Rights and in the Constitution. But what was this strange document and how did it gain such legendary status? Dan Jones takes us back to the turbulent year of 1215, when, beset by foreign crises and cornered by a growing domestic rebellion, King John reluctantly agreed to fix his seal to a document that would change the course of history.

Very enjoyable and entertaining! I have several of Dan Jones’ works, and this has to be among his best.

Story
At dawn on Easter morning 1343, a marauding band of French raiders arrives by boat to ambush the coastal village of Hookton. To brave young Thomas, the only survivor, the horror of the attack is epitomized by the casual savagery of a particular black-clad knight. Thomas vows to avenge the murder of his townsmen and recapture a holy treasure that the black knight stole from the church.

Disappointed

Structurally, the story is flawed. Major event sets everything in motion, protagonist decides he isn’t interested in it though, and achieves his goal with a few pages remaining by accident. Are you kidding me??? Dialogue is intriguing but ridiculous. Performer doesn’t try to distinguish the various characters. Battles were great, but that’s pretty much the only complement I can give.
