Narrator is awful
Reviewed: 10-01-23
This is the 4th book in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 3 and the narrator in 1-3 was great BUT they changed narrators in this one and he was so bad I was irritated through the whole book. He made Agent Zero and Maria (the two main characters) sound like completely weak, uptight imbeciles. And the last half of the story was so highly implausible you have to just go with it if you want to get through the book. I see the 5th book has the same narrator (which I already bought). I’m going to return - mostly because of the terrible narrator.

A beautiful story
Reviewed: 03-07-23
Maybe, because my best friends husband died unexpectedly recently, or maybe because it was just so well written, it was poignant and beautiful. The emotions were so real and it was nice to read a book that broke my heart and put it back together again after reading so many mysteries and true war stories. Loved it.

This is the true crime best seller that was the basis for Martin Scorsese’s film masterpiece GoodFellas, which brought to life the violence, the excess, the families, the wives and girlfriends, the drugs, the payoffs, the paybacks, the jail time, and the Feds...with Henry Hill’s crackling narration drawn straight out of Wiseguy and overseeing all the unforgettable action.

One of the least entertaining mafia books out of the dozen or so I have on my shelf. I do not understand all the five star ratings. This is a good book to set the timer for 15 minutes and fall asleep to.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 01-19-23
There was a lot of positive hype around this book. First off, the female narrator was fine except every time she said “____ spoke” or “____ said” it was so stilted it was hard to get through the whole book constantly hearing it. The characters were underdeveloped with zero redeeming qualities to make them likable. The biggest disappointment was the ending. Sorry I wasted a credit.

Story
In one of the most compelling combat narratives ever written, Staff Sergeant David Bellavia, an Army infantry platoon leader in Iraq, gives a teeth-rattling, first-hand account of 11 straight days of heavy house-to-house fighting during the climactic second battle of Fallujah. His actions in the firefight, which included killing five insurgents in hand-to-hand combat, earned Bellavia the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, and New York state's highest military honor, the Conspicuous Service Cross.

This book grabbed me from the start and gives a realistic picture of what combat is like in our current world. There are no holds barred and it’s the nitty gritty without any sugar coating. A narrator can make or break an audible book and Ray Porter was excellent.

Story
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

This book had me pulled by so many emotions throughout. The best book I’ve listened to on WWII with first person accounts. I cried so many times (not all sad cries). It’s the only book I’ve referred to my husband from my library. He’s listening now.

Shelby works as a dog walker in northern California, and she’s just finished up her bi-weekly trip to the park with a husky named Pluto. When she brings him back to his house, she finds his owner - Todd Burke, a well-known local businessman and founder of an organic supplements company - lying on the bathroom floor, dead. A detective arrives on the scene. As she interviews Shelby, the body is inspected by a medical examiner, and more cops search Todd’s home, it becomes clear that the victim’s life was less picture-perfect than his clean-cut persona might lead you to believe.

After listening to a 13 hour audible book, I was in the mood for a short story. This fit the bill. Even though I figured out the murderer in the first 15 minutes, the book was still entertaining with many twists and turns. The end was interesting. Would like to see a sequel.

I struggled through this book with my emotions
Reviewed: 04-20-21
I wanted to quit listening a dozen times. It felt so heavy and sad to me. I kept on because I thought it has to get lighter. It wasn’t until around the 9th hour that I felt some hope. So well written, so emotional. Not 5 stars because I felt melancholy throughout the story. BUT it tells a story in history that is so relatable to today.

This book was long on an excellent history lesson, but I felt it was short on character development enough for me to be invested in them. I never connected with the characters. That being said, the narrator is great.
