We Are That Age!
Revisado: 09-11-22
What a fantastic thriller! Every woman of that certain age can identify with the these characters.
The very first chapter totally grabs your attention and so do the chapters that follow.
The people in the book are absolutely my friends. The plot moved quickly and since this is my first review, I will stop here. I do not want to give anything away…

Historia
In March 2020, at the request of the Los Angeles Times, Charles Finch became a reluctant diarist: As California sheltered in place, he began to write daily notes about the odd ambient changes in his own life and in the lives around him. The result is What Just Happened. In a warm, candid, welcoming voice, and in the tradition of Woolf and Orwell, Finch brings us into his own world: taking long evening walks near his home in LA, listening to music, and keeping virtual connections with friends across the country as they each experience the crisis.

My sentiments exactly!
Revisado: 12-07-21
When Charles Finch started the recollection, he started on the exact day I decided to stay in for the duration. He brought forth the dread and loneliness felt by all of us but also the slowing down of everything…the look of a city when no one is around. His timeline made more sense in retrospect then while it was happening…thanks CF.

Partnerships
Revisado: 05-14-19
My last review was totally off beat. Please excuse me for that one.
I loved this story, it brought up many issues for Charles to think about so the reader becomes more knowledgeable about the times of the late 1800’s.
You find out about the personalities in depth as they partnered on the current escapades...I did notice that Lady Jane and Sophia were not as prominently featured as it involved Charles Lennox’s other partnerships...but I must say everyone was in attendance, the Doctor and ToTo,Lord John, Polly, Scotland Yard, and of course Graham and brother Edmond. A few new characters filled out the edges and so it began hours of reading and listening pleasure.
It’s difficult to write a review with out giving away some key point in the plot line so I say read it already it will not disappoint you.

Historia
London, 1853: Young Charles Lenox is called upon by the duke of Dorset, one of England’s most revered noblemen, for help. A painting of the duke’s great-grandfather has been stolen from his private study. But the duke’s concern is not for his ancestor’s portrait; hiding in plain sight nearby is another painting of infinitely greater value, one that holds the key to one of the country’s most famous and best-kept secrets. Dorset believes the thieves took the wrong painting and may return when they realize their error.

I love Charles!
Revisado: 02-27-19
What is there not to like? Charles Finch has created such a likable group of beautiful people set in the Victorian era of changing times, yet there here are still strict rules of propriety and dress that is fascinating. So much detail and thought throughout the book that created the foundation to his future stories.
His characters are well rounded in both descriptions of physical attributes and their moral character. I love the cast! After meeting Charles Lennox, Elizabeth the neighbor, Graham the most perfect Butler...and the story unfolded, I could not stop with just one book.

Ever so British!
Revisado: 06-15-18
Ok, I’m not so discerning as a reader...but I love the description of every detail into the life of Lenox. His clothes his politics and importantly his character.
The reader is fantastic, modulating his voice and keeping all the characters in their own cadence. I have not grown tired of his voice or his nuances. I have to admit I have grown tired of the manner of speaking after 10 or 12 novels of another series...
The story was captivating as the story played out, but it did take awhile to get to the murder itself...I see that is beauty of this writer and am enjoying book number 1.

I loved this series! Nevermind the murder, what about the characters? I have read all of DCSmith books in a reading binge- I couldn’t believe it was over. I hope the author will be continuing this series.

A careful story
Revisado: 03-02-18
This was my second DC Smith murder mystery and I am hooked. I had just finished another series and had grown quite attached to the narrator and of course the characters. I was ready with a critical eye (ear) to see how the new narrator measured.
The overall experience is great, walking along side of this interesting detective that has a deeper side and a backbeat that will hold your interest- plus he is a funny guy.

Historia
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it’s a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter.

Deeply satisfying, moving still life.
Revisado: 09-12-16
Listening to the narrator, I found this story better than I had remembered. The cadence of his voice and the rhythm of the written word painted the most beautiful, idyllic place...as if coming home.
Louise Penny is a wonderful writer, with a murder so well hidden it held us all in suspense until the end. A craft, a skill, an art, like a painting with many layers, something you can look at many times and still there is something more.
