Not read by Beth

Personal preference: I usually choose to listen to books by whether they are read by the author. Beth has such an iconic voice and after years of watching her and listening to her stories, I find it difficult to finish listening to a book she has authored, that is not read by her. The book itself is fine. And I most likely will buy it to read. But, I find Myself unable to stayed tuned to someone else reading her work.

Story
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Loved the narrative and interview format.
“The Dead Drink First” felt very person from beginning to end.
My family has a long line of military history. This story tugged deep as it described grandfathers on both sides. Words like “Shell shocked”, alcohol and abuse ring true. Tears.
