Story
Thirty-four years ago, Violet Sullivan put on her party finery and left for the annual Fourth of July fireworks display. She was never seen again. In the small California town of Serena Station, tongues wagged. Some said she'd run off with a lover. Some said she was murdered by her husband.

Story
Private investigator Kinsey Millhone is back, sassy and self-reliant as ever. Visiting a small town in the Sierras, Kinsey aids a recent widow, Selma Newquist, who believes that her detective husband did not die of a heart attack, as reported, but from foul play. Kinsey sifts through the paper trail Tom Newquist left behind, trying to discover what he was investigating before he died. Kinsey is about to call it quits when she is severely beaten in her motel room.

I am finding that her books get better with each new letter. I'm very sad she was not able to complete the series.

This is the first in the popular series featuring California investigator Kinsey Millhone. She's 32, twice divorced, no kids, an ex-cop who likes her work...and who works strictly alone!

Love Sue Grafton but this is not her best
Reviewed: 02-21-22
Sue Grafton is one of my favorite authors, and I have read them all. Read this one 25 years ago so I am listening to it again. I remember it took at least 2, maybe 3 books before I was hooked. Her writing gets better each book and Kinsey really gets fleshed out to the perfect, very imperfect, heroine. The narration was ok, but I really prefer Judy Kaye.

Story
The darkest and most disturbing case report from the files of Kinsey Millhone, Y begins in 1979, when four teenage boys from an elite private school sexually assault a 14-year-old classmate - and film the attack. Not long after, the tape goes missing, and the suspected thief, a fellow classmate, is murdered. In the investigation that follows, one boy turns state's evidence, and two of his peers are convicted. But the ringleader escapes without a trace.

So sad to say goodbye to Kinsey. Other than being distracted by dialogue I don't feel young people would use, I really enjoyed this book. Very good story - especially if you have been reading the series. RIP Sue Grafton - your talents will be missed!

Story
Two dead bodies changed the course of my life that fall. One of them I knew and the other I'd never laid eyes on until I saw him in the morgue. The first was a local PI of suspect reputation. He'd been gunned down near the beach at Santa Teresa. It looked like a robbery gone bad. The other was on the beach six weeks later. He'd been sleeping rough. Probably homeless. No identification. A slip of paper with Millhone's name and number was in his pants pocket. The coroner asked her to come to the morgue to see if she could ID him.

These books are still my favorite and Judy Kaye does a great job of bringing Kinsey to life - with her witty sarcasm, and her wonderfully perfect imperfections.

Good, not great book, but kept my interest even though somewhat predictable. Narrator did a good job but just a couple of times I felt she took a second to slip from one character's tone to another. Overall it took my mind off my day to day which is what I am looking for in a book in the end.
