Story
Losing weight has become the modern woman’s Holy Grail.… Everything will be better when we’re thin. In the 21st century, being thin, even more than being rich or happy, sends a clear message of success to the outside world. No wonder then that disordered eating is on the rise and we’re increasingly unhappy with our bodies. The Ministry of Thin takes a controversial, unflinching look at how our desire to lose weight is out of control; at the widespread depression that results, the tyranny of celebrity culture and the dangerous extremes - including drip-diets and cosmetic surgery - to which we will go to be skinny.

Compelling and Relevant Book by a Great Author!
Reviewed: 04-02-22
The author voices her own book, which I find so interesting, and she does a great job of carrying the story in her emotions and tone of voice, plus the plot is exactly what I've been wishing for. A deep, unidolatorous look at the crimes we women commit against ourselves as we try, once again, to please our worst critics as we push our favorite foods far from us and get on the treadmill a second time that day. We neglect our dreams and life's purpose to chase a figment, and ideal - and this book shows us WHY we do that, and how culture works to continue this impossible ideal. Thanks Emma, you da bomb. <3

Beautiful Story of Struggle and Growth
Reviewed: 07-23-21
I loved this book so much. I related to the character, and though this story follows a typical recovery format, it's not dry or too samey as other anorexia and bulimia stories. This book also didn't glorify anorexia or thinness, it is just a raw account of a life experience. Props to the author for finding her own unique voice!

Best-selling author Paul David Tripp weaves together his personal story, years of counseling experience, and biblical insights to help us in the midst of suffering, identifying six traps to avoid - including doubt, discouragement, and denial - and six comforts to embrace - including God’s presence, God’s people, and God’s grace.

Walking with God through Pain and Suffering is the definitive Christian book on why bad things happen and how we should respond to them. The question of why there is pain and suffering in the world has confounded every generation; yet there has not been a major book from a Christian perspective exploring why they exist for many years.

Too many discipleship books are written for clean, perfect people who know all the right Sunday school answers. The Imperfect Disciple is for the rest of us - people who screw up, people who are weary, people who are wondering if it's safe to say what they're really thinking. For the believer who is tired of quasi-spiritual lifehacks being passed off as true, down-and-dirty discipleship, here is a discipleship book that isn't afraid to be honest about the mess we call real life.

Story
Institutes of the Christian Religion is John Calvin's seminal work on Protestant systematic theology. Highly influential in the Western world and still widely read by theological students today, it was published in Latin in 1536 and in his native French in 1541. The book serves as an introductory textbook on the Protestant faith for those with some previous knowledge of theology and covers a broad range of theological topics from the doctrines of church and sacraments to justification by faith alone and Christian liberty.

A Classic Compendium of Reformed Theology
Reviewed: 01-28-19
Jean Calvin's magnum opus, 'The Institutes' fills four volumes with thorough treatises on God, Man, and the Church.
Although Calvin has a very mixed reputation amongst believers, this work is a valuable piece of literature for all, expansive in its scope and carefully reasoned, and offering insight into the surprising depth and breadth of thought within medieval Christianity. Calvin's scholarship is apparent as he covers various topics, quoting copiously not only from the Bible, but also a multitude of church fathers(admittedly favoring Augustine but quoting many others).
Even if you don't share his beliefs, you will no doubt find knowledge to consider in Calvin's work.
