Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. I cannot give enough praise for this book. I normally don’t go for a war themed book. But I was recommended this, and I’m really glad I listened. This is such a heart wrenching and heroic story. The narration is the best I’ve ever heard. If I could give it a million stars, I would.

Story
Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

Well written, very “Stephen king-esque”
Reviewed: 01-15-25
I thought the book was well written. Very cool storyline. The book was recommended to me, although it is not my typical kind of read. Some of the parts are a little too dark for me, but that’s just by personal taste. The narrator was also quite good. It was my first Joe Hill book. I have read many of his father, Stephen King‘s books. If you like Stephen King, you will definitely like this book.

Story
Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions. In 1982 Victorian police were called to a home on a housing estate an hour west of Melbourne. There, they found a five-year-old boy lying still and silent on the carpet. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but the child, Jacob, died the next day. The story made the headlines, and hundreds attended the funeral. Few people were surprised when the boy's mother and her boyfriend went to prison for the crime.

Story
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

I don’t have the words right now to describe how amazing this story was. I love a good mystery story, and it was that. Everything tied up perfectly. I really couldn’t find any flaws in the authors writing. But what really put it over the top was the absolute amazing job by the narrator. I have never been so impressed with a narration as I was with this. 100% recommend.

It was OK. I felt like it was written for teens/young adults. I love anything to do with the metaphysical, and I love fantasy stories, but it just didn’t hit home with me. Also, I’m far from a prude, but I felt like the random “sex scenes” were completely unnecessary and made me gag, a bit.

Story
This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

It was a fun idea, but it didn’t keep me wanting more. It was like as I read in another persons review, “I kept waiting for it to get creepier”. And as the idea was great, it could’ve been, but something just kept it from being as scary as it could’ve been.
The narrator did a decent job.

It was an interesting story, but slightly bland. It seemed rushed. The narrators were decent but far more dramatic that what was called for, and the narrator who read for wren made me cringe with her Mens voices.
