Story
Francis Ford Coppola is one of the great American dreamers, and his most magnificent dream is American Zoetrope, the production company he founded in San Francisco years before his gargantuan success, when he was only thirty. Through Zoetrope’s experimental, communal utopia, Coppola attempted to reimagine the entire pursuit of moviemaking. Now, more than fifty years later, despite myriad setbacks, the visionary filmmaker’s dream persists, most notably in the production of his decades-in-the-making film and the culmination of his utopian ideals, Megalopolis.

Story
This funny, rich, raunchy autobiography re-creates the adventures of a very young soldier in the US Army at the height of the Depression. Charles Willeford was 16 in 1935 when he signed up and was sent to the Philippines. And the Philippines of those days was like a place out of another century. Willeford’s job was to fuel aircraft whose pilots treated him and his buddies almost like slaves. At night, however, he was a lord, fully exploring a great, timeless, and sensual city with a multitude of women available - even on a private’s pay.

I found this a very interesting window into Charles Willeford’s early years. The fiction he went on to write (or rather write before writing this account of his past) was formed in part by his experiences as a young adult.

From the glamorous to the entitled, from royalty to the financially ruined, everyone who wanted to be seen—or just to gawk—at the hottest restaurants in New York City came to places Michael Cecchi-Azzolina helped run. His phone number was passed around among those who wanted to curry favor, during the decades when restaurants replaced clubs and theater as, well, theater in the most visible, vibrant city in the world. Besides dropping us back into a vanished time, Your Table Is Ready takes us places we’d never be able to get into on our own.

I couldn’t stop listening.
The story is Suspenseful, even when you can see where it is headed.
The only thing keeping me from five stars was the contempt I often felt for the main character, and the simpering way she was narrated (intentionally I imagine) while behaving so foolishly, although this is probably intentional.

This story started out as an audible page turner, and was interesting for the most part, but the ending was ridiculous.
While fiction requires some suspension of disbelief, the conclusion was too far fetched for my liking. It applied the journey for me
