Story
In this moving account, Peter Korn explores the nature and rewards of creative practice. We follow his search for meaning as an Ivy-educated child of the middle class who finds employment as a novice carpenter on Nantucket, transitions to self-employment as a designer and maker of fine furniture, takes a turn at teaching and administration at Colorado's Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and then founds a school in Maine: the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, an internationally respected nonprofit institution.

Autobiography in disguise
Reviewed: 08-27-20
It'd not bad! He brings up some interesting points about how a creator doesn't create a work in a vacuum, it's influenced by community and the materials.
But, the entire book is interspersed with his autobiography, he had a few lucky breaks which sort of distract from his main message? It's like when you learn that Thoreau had his laundry done by his mom while writing Walden.

Story
Dr. Hallowell now identifies the underlying reasons why people lose their ability to focus at work. He explains why commonly offered solutions like "learn to manage your time better" or "make a to-do list" don't work because they ignore the deeper issues that are the true causes of mental distraction. Based on his years of helping clients develop constructive ways to deal with distraction, Dr. Hallowell provides a set of practical and reliable techniques to show how to sustain a productive mental state.

Between following the suggestions in this book (and proper medication of course) I really feel like I'm doing the right thing. The character profiles are a little melodramatic, but that didn't stop me from breaking down at the "screen sucking" chapter... I'd say do the survey he mentions, listen to all the intros to each chapter, but don't feel too guilty skipping any that you don't really identify with.
(definitely recommend going with 2x speed, he talks slowly and clearly so it works great)

Master one of our economy’s most rare skills and achieve groundbreaking results with this “exciting” audiobook (Daniel H. Pink) from an “exceptional” author (New York Times Book Review). Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It's a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time. Deep Work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship.

I'm a little disappointed how much of the book is spent selling deep work as opposed to how to practice and develop it. There's lots of stuff on "bringing value" that I'm just not too concerned about.

Some people say 'sconn' while others say 'schown'. He says 'bath' while she says 'bahth'. You say 'potayto'. I say 'potahto'. And - wait a second, no one says 'potahto'. No one's ever said 'potahto'. Have they? From reconstructing Shakespeare's accent to the rise and fall of received pronunciation, actor Ben Crystal and his linguist father, David, travel the world in search of the stories of spoken English.

Big fan, but I kind of wish there were more recordings by native speakers of the language. Also very British centric, American listeners (like me) might have trouble keeping up with the pop culture and geographic references.
