More Scary & Violent Than "Heartwarming Adventure"

Epic-style adventure with some scary stuff
Reviewed: 12-17-24
This is an epic-style children’s story. It is perhaps best for an older kid—9 or 10. It’s very sad at the beginning and then quite scary. My 7.5 year old loved it, but I cringed more than once. Story is thrilling with a happy ending.

Well-researched and suspenseful
Reviewed: 12-17-23
Stephanie Barron’s novels are well-researched and fun. As a professor, I learn as much factual information as I do “who-dunnit.” This first story had a bit of silliness, but it was the first novel, and the author had some setup to do for the remaining series. The mysteries are interesting and the immersion into Austen’s world fascinating. The reader is also enjoyable.

Cool stories, but violent
Reviewed: 06-19-23
Unique selection of folk stories and a good reader, but the stories are so interesting they aren’t especially relaxing. The stories also discuss a lot of violence (including infanticide and beheadings), so not for little kids.
