Story
Jo told him the phone call had been about a woman who wanted to have her husband declared dead. Smith thought for a moment and then said, 'Hmm. There must be a few million women in this country who feel like that. I take it her husband's been missing for a while and she's decided it's time to move on. In the absence of a body, which is always a nuisance, she wants Diver and Diver to confirm there's no proof he's alive. And I've told Jason a dozen times I'm not getting involved in anything matrimonial. I have enough trouble sorting out my own relationships.'

Highly recommended

I have hundreds of Audiobooks. I have read every Kindle book and listened to every Audiobook in this series by Peter Grainger and I rate these novels in the top five of my favourite authors. Plus, I think the narration by Gildart Jackson actually adds to the enjoyment and the feel for the characters in the story... it wouldn't be the same with any other narrator.
If you have any interest in this genre, do yourself a big favour and read the series from the beginning. While every novel is a rewarding listen in its own right, the character development and story arc is not to be missed.

A series of bodies has been found along a beach close to his home and he can no longer deny that a serial killer is on the loose, and no one seems able to find the culprit. Is the failure to find the perpetrator a result of the department's oversight? Is it due to the fact the victims are prostitutes? Or is it something darker? Could the killer be someone on the inside? John Corey must root out friend and foe.

I have enjoyed all the John Corey books. This one, while, in my opinion, was not as good as the previous novels, was ok. For old times sake.

Seemed to run flat
Reviewed: 09-25-22
Book 1 in this series was excellent, Book 2 seems to have run out of story to tell. The padding side stories didn't add to the book. I don't think I will be reading book 3. R C Bray narration is, as always, excellent and adds substantially to the novel's enjoyment.

Story
My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

Suspend disbelief and its a very entertaining story. The interaction between our hero and his dog is excellent. Made me smile many times and even laugh out loud. Good escapist entertainment. Bray is, of course, simply excellent as the narrator making to book that much more enjoyable.

Dissapointing
Reviewed: 08-04-22
Seriously disappointing. I didn't finish the book. It was so depressing and laborious to listen too I decided it would be better to do something else. Anything else. Scott Brick, who I normally like as a narrator, sounds like he is dragging his way thru reading the book and is, himself, clinically depressed.

I found the storyline hard to follow. Most chapters are set in different timeframes "Eight days before" "4 weeks earlier" "present day". In my opinion this treatment has overwhelmed what could have been an excellent story.
Maybe I should have taken notes to keep track.

Narration spoils what would be a good read.
I liked Mr Eisler's novels (I have print versions of most all of them and I listened to Audio versions before and I persevered with the audio books after he chose to read his own books years ago)
I feel bad scoring low on the Story...I did not finish the book.... but every character just sounded like Barry reading his book so I gave up. Normally I would return a book like this ... but I left it in my library.
I appreciate lots of folks don't mind the narration but I am not one of them. So no more Eisler for me.
