Background to 9-11 and US foreign policy

Steve Coll weaves together the stories of the key figures and events behind the rise of the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan. From Pakistani heads of state to CIA Directors with a Southern drawl, the story that lead to 9-11 is a complex soup of bureaucracy, cruise missiles, feckless intelligence agencies, and Pashtun nationalists. However, potential buyers should beware this book is not an analysis of 9-11 or the merits of the claims of the 9-11 commission. It is Steve Coll’s representation of the build up to 9-11 and the various failures that created it. He does hint at Saudi and UAE involvement. Anyone who has studied 9-11, and specifically what happened to building 7 of the WTC, will know that some part of the official story leaves out important details. As Steve Coll speculates, this may have been done on purpose out of the interest of managing future bilateral partnerships. Don’t miss this book.

Ann Coulter radically changed my position on immigration. Her accessible and funny writing style weaves flawlessly between cold, hard statistics that feel like a punch in the gut to any proud American. You can either ignore her thesis or agree with her thesis, but you cannot deny her thesis. Must read.

Return to ancient Greece and be witness to the strength, beauty, and wisdom of the Athenian heroes. While there, readers may find striking parallels to modern times. Thucydides' history will expand your mind, and snag it on timeless questions. Is modern Western Civilization at the end of its own history? Only time will tell.

This book is complete and utter rubbish. The author paints himself as a savior while he fabricates an Orwellian tale of Evil America thinly veiled by false patriotism, stating the founding fathers would have "fought for the Viet Cong." Moreover, its core assertions about the global economic system are demonstrably false. In short, anyone who is educated on the subject will find the book ridden with personal self-aggrandizement, but certainly nothing of value to others. Do not waste your hard-earned money feeding this conman.

An enthralling book, but Graham ventures too far into speculation. Nonetheless, the consolidation of so many verified scientific facts does well for the mind to conceive of new possibilities for the past and the future. At times the argument devolves into what fits Graham's theory and not what is most likely, or he will take inconclusive data and draw a conclusion based on his "intuition." Still, a worthwhile prequel to Magicians of the Gods.
