This book was thoroughly entertaining. The characters were well-developed and there was just enough mystery to keep me anxious for my next listening session. The forces of good vs evil in a different setting. A good listen, and I recommend it!

Examining murder from an insider’s perspective, Matt Murphy—a former senior deputy district attorney and current ABC News legal analyst—discusses cases from his career, how they strained his personal life, and how he found peace seeking justice for victims and their families. Part taxonomy of murder, part prosecutor’s handbook, and part personal memoir, The Book of Murder goes through a dozen cases and his recollections of his 26 years in the Orange County DA’s office (17 in the Homicide Unit).

This book makes me hope that Matt Murphy will follow up with more! Being a true crime junkie, I was familiar with a few of the cases in the book, but the author’s details filled in gaps that almost made the cases seem new to
me. I’ve watched Matt Murphy on many crime shows. He’s outstanding at his craft, and now he should continue working on this new craft, as he is also outstanding as a writer and narrator. Bravo! Highly recommend this title!

The young woman in the barn had been kept captive for some time. And the case shows strong similarities to an unsolved murder in Derbyshire. My new favorite. 😁
Reviewed: 08-24-24
As I’ve said in previous reviews of Joy Ellis books, every new one becomes my favorite. This one is no exception. The narration is absolutely superb and most definitely adds to the intrigue and interest of the book. The cliff-hanger ending of this one makes me very anxious to start the next one. Can’t recommend this book highly enough.

I’ve run out of superlatives for Joy Ellis’s books. I’m actually incapable of writing a decent review as I am so dedicated to her books and have not run across a single one I’d rate less than tops. Great story, marvelous narration…100% enjoyable! As always.

Honesty on parade
Reviewed: 07-12-24
I like the fact that the author bared his soul and kept apparently nothing negative about his life untold. I liked the premise of the book, but the author’s performance of it was just awful. He mispronounced so many words that I began to wonder if he actually did in fact write the book. By about chapter 20-something, I was bored to death. I would not recommend this title, even though I had hoped I would.

From 1926 to 1928, Gordon Stewart Northcott committed at least 20 murders on a chicken ranch outside of Los Angeles. His nephew, Sanford Clark, was held captive there from the age of 13 to 15, and was the sole surviving victim of the killing spree. Here, acclaimed crime writer Anthony Flacco - using never-before-heard information from Sanford’s son Jerry Clark - tells the real story behind the case that riveted the nation.

Hard to listen to but worth the effort
Reviewed: 06-20-24
Monsters in human form really do exist. Most of this book is testimony to that fact and was hard to listen to because of the brutality inflicted on this young boy. But his story is so compelling as to make it worth the effort. The book is well-written and the narration is good. My only issue with the narrator is the fact that at times his vocal characterization of the monster carried over into the good people. Overall, this is a story worth hearing.

Detective Matt Ballard may have retired but there's still plenty going on in the fens to keep him busy. Someone trashes an old lady's garden and daubs her isolated cottage with hateful graffiti. Joy Ellis is my favorite author. Every time I read one of her books, I’m amazed at how thoroughly she confounds the reader. I’m always wrong when I think I’ve figured it out. At first I wasn’t a fan of the narrator, because he seemed a bit too theatrical for my taste. But as I got further into the book, I changed my mind. This book was thoroughly enjoyable and engaging. Highly recommend this title!
