Story
Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

A rare masterpiece

Can anyone else write like this? Mc Carthy's vocabulary and masterful way of putting words together has my admiration. The reader was superb. The story itself was at times almost to difficulty to bear, with the characters going both experiencing and causing seemingly endless suffering, with very few joyful or bright spots in the story. At times it was too gruesome for me, with its over the top masculine violence, and for that reason I could not recommend to everyone. But I could not put it down. It's sad that McCarthy recently died, but his books will always be treasured by some of us.

Drama, humor, & the unexpected

What a great story told from the point of view of a young man who can communicate with the dead. Touchingly warm story about a single mom raising a son in NYC, plus a fascinating tale of spirits. Plus so much humor- the thoughts of the young boy - his observations about the world of adults are witty and hilarious. The last chapter has high drama and a satisfying ending. A great read!

I intended to go through the first chapter only to see if I liked it enough to recommend to be book club, but had to read the whole thing. My husband also found it to be a very compelling story. It’s beautifully written as well.

Story
All the stories in this collection from Stephen King are related to the Vietnam War. King fans will recognize echoes of The Dark Tower series in the collection's first story, "Low Men in Yellow Coats." As the characters develop over the next four stories, King's version of the Vietnam War becomes one of his most frightening tales ever.

A rich, deep story, with unforgettable characters.

This story seemed to go on forever, yet when it finally ended, I wished it didn’t. The writing is brilliant, raw, but also tender, deeply emotional, and always suspenseful. This is not one of Stephen Kings horror novels, but one that speaks deeply to the human condition, life and all its trials and lessons. It is one of the most incredible stories I have ever read. I will now get a paperback copy to put in my forever library, where I have the books that spoke to me most deeply, the books I’ll never part with.
