Story
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Extraordinary

This book was recommended to me by a friend. I had not heard of this author. I purchased the Audible version which was narrated by the author. I listened to the the entire book in one day. it was simply incredible. Desperately sad at some points and renewing my hope in humanity at others. The author delves deeply into childhood trauma and how those traumas affect adulthood. But also, how those traumas are used by a gracious God to work in and through us. God wastes nothing. This truly is an extraordinary book, beautifully written.

I listened to this on Audible over two days. I started listening to it to try to understand how to deal with toxic people in my life and ended up learning so much about myself. This book is steeped in scriptural truth. I ordered the book and am thinking about doing the six week study. In any event I will definitely be listening again as I make notes in the book. Excellent, solid teaching.
