Story
Social media influencer and podcast host April Ajoy wouldn’t have called herself a Christian Nationalist when she performed her original song “America Say Jesus” on the Jim Bakker show, or when she participated in Jesus Marches across America, or when she posted cringe-worthy videos on YouTube to campaign for Mitt Romney. April just considered herself a good Christian: faithful, Republican, and determined to make America a Christian nation once again.

The Book I Needed
Reviewed: 10-20-24
I’ve struggled with my beliefs that I’d grown up with in the past few years… often wondering what was going on with me. I found myself questioning so much of what I was seeing at my church since the election of Donald Trump in 2016. As April notes in her book, no one plans on deconstructing. It just kind of happens. I’m so thankful to have April’s memoir to help guide me through all of this. Her explanation of Christian Nationalism is both informative and hilarious! (As a side note I now know I wasn’t the only one who, as a kid, freaked out when the house got too quiet and panicked that the Rapture had occurred without me!). Thank you, April, for writing this book. It’s certainly opened my eyes to a world that’s no longer black and white, and I think I’m better for it.

A compelling, thought-provoking memoir about Nancy French's journey from her family's mountain roots to success as a ghostwriter, only to be rejected by her party, church, and community. Ghosted by New York Times bestselling author Nancy French is for all who were alienated by those closest to them and left spiritually and politically homeless.

I did not know what to expect. I purchased it on the recommendation of Russell Moore on his podcast. I do not regret that decision at all. Nancy French’s life is amazing. She had me laughing, crying and every emotion in between. I was inspired by reading her story. While our lives have been nothing alike we came to the same crossroads in 2016. I’m so glad she and others are willing to tell their stories. I don’t feel so alone. This is the best book I’ve read so far in 2024 and I hope and pray I’ll hear more from her for many years.

Rock and roll in the BC (Before Cooper) era was a tamer, milder world. In Who I Really Am, Cooper’s latest addition to Audible’s Words + Music series, we learn how the boa-wearing (not the feathered kind) maestro arrived at a show and sound - let’s call it AC for After Cooper - that has entertained millions of kids while terrifying parents in equal measure. Cooper drew inspiration from Saturday matinee horror movies, applied a "no such thing as too much" attitude, and hitched it to a kick-ass rock and roll band.

What a great, quick telling of the Alice Cooper story. As a Gen Xer whose first exposure to Alice was The Muppet Show this filled in a lot of the early years that I didn’t know.
Would love to find some of those acoustic tracks in your music library someday!

Story
Packed with new reporting, Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Old Party tracks Trump’s improbable journey from disgraced and defeated former president to the dominant force, yet again, in the Republican Party. From his exile in Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump has become more extreme, vengeful, and divorced from reality than he was on January 6, 2021. His meddling damaged the GOP’s electoral prospects and his legal troubles were mounting. Yet he re-emerged as the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and the president-elect.

New York Times bestselling author Joe Posnanski is back with a masterful ode to the game: a countdown of 50 of the most memorable moments in baseball’s history, to make you fall in love with the sport all over again. Posnanski writes of major moments that created legends, and of forgotten moments almost lost to time. It's Willie Mays’s catch, Babe Ruth’s called shot, and Kirk Gibson’s limping home run; the slickest steals; the biggest bombs; and the most triumphant no-hitters.

Story
American evangelical Christianity has lost its way. While the witness of the church before a watching world is diminished beyond recognition, congregations are torn apart over Donald Trump, Christian nationalism, racial injustice, sexual predation, disgraced leaders, and covered-up scandals. Left behind are millions of believers who counted on the church to be a place of belonging and hope. As greater and greater numbers of younger Americans bleed out from the church, even the most rooted evangelicals are wondering, “Can American Christianity survive?”

As a lifelong Southern Baptist I became disillusioned in the past decade by what was happening in the church. I thought I was going crazy when what I believed was all of a sudden at odds with the leadership of the SBC and my preferred political party. Thank goodness Russell Moore came along ( with help from David and Nancy French) to show me that I was not alone. This book helps with what I’ve been feeling since 2015.

Really well done book by Michael Malice. As a Gen X Cold War kid I appreciated the fact that Malice’s book highlights the rise and fall of the Soviet empire and how truly awful these leftist hero were in their quest to create their version of utopia. I highly recommend it. The audio book suffers from poor editing which makes Malice sound likely he’s speed reading his book. I literally checked the controls because I thought it was running at 1.5x speed. Info comes at you hard and fast so be alert.

Story
On January 6, 2021, insurgents stormed the U.S. Capitol, an act of domestic terror without parallel in American history, designed to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. In a resolution six months later, the House of Representatives called it "one of the darkest days of our democracy," and established a special committee to investigate how and why the attack happened. Celadon Books, in collaboration with The New Yorker, presents the committee's final report, the definitive account of January 6th and what led up to it.

Must Listen For All Americans
Reviewed: 02-06-23
I found this very enlightening as to the facts of January 6.
My only critique is ending it with an afterword from Rep. Jamie Raskin. A report filled with facts suddenly became a stump speech for progressive America. As a forward thinking independent I found it, quite frankly, insulting.

Bono‘s reading and writing is top notch. Poetry and prose all rolled into one.
