My absolute all time favorite

I have read and listened to this book more times than I can count. I have given copies away and recommended it many times. It is powerful and provocative and she does not shy away from the hard issues that Christian authors are sometimes afraid to address. This book hits right to the heart of the struggles of truly surrendering to Christ. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry.

Story
Thirteen-year-old orphan Alice Ringwald has no memory beyond six months ago. The only life she knows is the new one she's creating one day at a time with the loving couple that recently adopted her and gave her new hope. That hope, however, is shattered one night when she is abducted by a strange man. In a frantic FBI man hunt, the kidnapper vanished with Alice. So begins Water Walker, a modern-day parable that examines the staggering power of forgiveness, and reminds us that it's possible to live free of the hurt that keeps our souls in chains.

Story
For years, Amy has traveled to a holy place in her dreams - a sublime place she calls the Living Room. When she awakes, her faith and energy are supernaturally restored. And when she dreams, she receives vibrant inspiration for her novels. As she begins to write her third book, the nature of her dreams shifts. Gone are the literary signposts. Instead, her dreams are studded with scenes that foreshadow real life. Before long, the scenes begin to spill over into her waking hours too.

Teachy
Reviewed: 03-12-15
I liked the concept but it was very Teachy, a lot of repeated information. I think it's hard for an author to write about another author because we learned about the process in depth and it interrupted the flow of the story. The performance also came off as someone reading a book not bringing it to life.

Story
Commander Mark Bishop is deliberately low-key: "I'm in the Navy." But commanding the ballistic missile submarine USS Nevada, keeping her crew trained and alert during 90-day submerged patrols, and being prepared to launch weapons on valid presidential orders, carries a burden of command like few other jobs in the military. Mark wants someone to come home to after sea patrols. The woman he has in mind is young, with a lovely smile, and very smart. She's a civilian, yet she understands the U.S. Navy culture.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I normally love Dee Henderson, but as much as I hate to admit it, boring. I liked the characters, but it seemed unrealistic. To have two guys who are okay that you are dating both of them, and even okay that both propose, and one stopping you from turning down the other, seriously?? It just felt like they were all too "perfect" Christian. Everything goes good for them, and they have more than enough money, and time and perfect answers for everything. I've been a Christian for my whole life and it's just not that realistic. Christians are sinners that God has redeemed. To have this many people with perfect stories and reactions just didn't sit right with me. It felt like reading a story instead of stepping into someone's story and living it with them for a little bit.
What could Dee Henderson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
More twists and turns, and tension which is her normal style. This series just feels too perfect. The other sequel to this story is about someone who was complaining about having too much money, and this one is complaining about being too smart.
What does Adam Verner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I love Adam's style and bringing the book to life. He stays true to the story with his inflections.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I mean no, I didn't love it, but it's not horrid either. There's a lot of great information, and you learn about submarines and our Navy, and everything they do for us to protect us. It's written well. It's just that when you are used to a writer's style, and this is so opposite that it's hard to fully enjoy.

Story
This compelling story is set in the historical town of Lancaster, Ohio, and is based on the true-life story of Elizabeth Davidson. The novel is set in 1876, several generations after the Davidsons are established in America. Elizabeth is the protagonist, the adored youngest daughter, spoiled and indulged, but she finds life overwhelming when her young husband, Samuel, dies - leaving her penniless with a young son to raise.

Overly Dramatic
Reviewed: 01-09-13
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The narrator is okay, but not very good. For lines that are already ridiculously over dramatic. I like the overall story, but the beginning is hard to get through and way the characters speak to each other aren't believable.
How could the performance have been better?
Tone down some of the drama and some of the inflections.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
In the end the twists and turns were good, and make it worth going through it, but I'm listening to it for the second time right now and I keep gritting my teeth.

Good Story, but not so good narration
Reviewed: 07-18-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator definitely. She was reading the story instead bringing the story to life. This is how it sounds to read the book to kindergarteners. There was very little voice change from character to character and sometimes it was hard to follow who was speaking. They also sound really flat. The book has a lot of medical terminology, but I actually enjoy it.The story line is a little predictable as well, but I don't know how much of that is to the way the story is being presented.
What did you like best about this story?
I like the inside look into the medical world and how things run or are supposed to run.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Katy Cole?
Katherine Kellgren or Kate Forbes
Do you think Could I Have This Dance? needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
It already does.

Read with Caution

I bought this book because I believed that it was a historical fiction book. In a way it is, and in a way it does incorporate some Biblical characters etc. It does talk about the place that women have in that time period and the struggles and the traditions that they would create. However, there is some very strong sexual language and content which I would not normally associate with a Christian book. The message is extreemly feminist and mythelogical more than Biblical values and principles. It places more emphasis on dead relatives having power to change our lives than on the power that God has. Recently in a Sunday School class this was brought up as a Christian Historical Fiction example, however, the presenter herself had not read it. I warned the class that think carefully prior to reading it.

I had a hard time listening to this one. Unnecessary swearing and a very thick british accent. I don't know if I will finish listening to this one because I'm already 2 hours into the 8 hour recording and there is no point to the story yet other than a woman who suspects her husband is having an affair and everyone gossiping about her.

I liked the story and I liked how the reader incorporated different effects. For examnple, if the person was on the phone, it sounded like it. The only thing was that she read so fast with very few stops for effect. It jump from one thought to another and was hard to have my mind keep up.
