Story
The ancient Sibylline prophecies had foretold that the Roman Empire would last for 1000 years. As the time for the expected dissolution approached in the middle of the third century AD, the empire was lapsing into chaos, with seemingly interminable civil wars over the imperial succession. The western empire had seceded under a rebel emperor and the eastern empire was controlled by another usurper. Barbarians took advantage of the anarchy to kill and plunder all over the provinces.

a good book about the 3 century crisis
Reviewed: 06-16-24
A good book about the 3 century crisis with focus on the emperor aurelian. It is difficult to find information about this period so very happy about this book. Sometimes it gets a bit too specific for example about coins and inscriptions and ancient sources, but these details would maybe be clearer in a written than audio book. In the end it is a bit too general about the time after the 3 century and not sure if it was needed to go so far from the focus. Still, overall it a pleasent, intresting and informative book, which I can highly recommend.

Story
Drawing from both Christian and Islamic sources, Reconquest and Crusade in Medieval Spain demonstrates that the clash of arms between Christians and Muslims in the Iberian peninsula that began in the early eighth century was transformed into a crusade by the papacy during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Successive popes accorded to Christian warriors willing to participate in the peninsular wars against Islam the same crusading benefits offered to those going to the Holy Land.

The details about the finacing of the reconquest.
Reviewed: 01-20-24
The book has got some bad reviews but I think it worth a listen for the really history intrested, especially considering the lack of books on medieval Spain and the reconquest. The narration is maybe not so inspiring but not bad. The book focuses on the reconquest and not the general medieval history of Spain. It can be a little bit difficult to follow with different names of kings and kingdooms if they are not familiar. Then it goes in details about the miltary techniques, taxation, income of the kingdoms and the theology about the reconquest. This part was very informative and intresting. However, a little bit more introduction about the different kingdoms and more information about the moors would be helpful.

The Late Middle Ages-the two centuries from c. 1300 to c. 1500 - might seem like a distant era, but students of history are still trying to reach a consensus about how it should be interpreted. Was it an era of calamity or rebirth? Was it still clearly medieval or the period in which humanity took its first decisive steps into modernity? These 24 provocative lectures introduce you to the age's major events, personalities, and developments, and arms you with the essentials you need to form your own ideas about this age of extremes.
