Story
Hockey star Max Yearwood was everything I needed at the time - fun, sexy, up for anything, and only around for a few months, since he’d signed with a new team 3,000 miles away. Max proposed we spend the summer helping me forget my ex. It sounded like a good plan. Things couldn’t get too serious when we had an expiration date. Right? Though, you know what they say about the best-laid plans.

I like this authors books, but wish the characters were more fleshed out. Instead of someone smiling sadly, I’d like to know more about what thoughts are going through their head(s). Sometimes it’s like their actions are being blocked/staged instead. The voice actors are fantastic as they bring more emotion from the pages.

Story
Roger Stringer grew up in rural Mississippi, hunting and eating everything from deer to rabbits. When he had two sons, Zac and Justin, he gave them guns and took them to the woods as well. Then one day when the boys were home alone, he got a call from Zac that Justin had been shot. What follows is an intimate and gripping memoir about the shooting’s aftermath. The story moves between the perspectives of Roger and Zac as they take us through their journey of betrayal, redemption, and ultimately confrontation with a company that had kept its corruption a secret for decades.

Not knowing anything about the story I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s a good story about things that can go wrong in a split second and how a family can be torn apart leaving a child alone in the worst of circumstance. Personally, I loved this story about the family and about how gun manufacturers are not held to account, no matter the damage they inflict on the public. This audiobook is well worth a listen.

A blueprint. A bible. What Sun Tzu’s Art of War was to ancient China, Pimp is to the streets. As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Iceberg Slim’s life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. It is a trip through hell by the one man who lived to tell the tale—the dangers of jail, addiction, and death that are still all too familiar for today’s Black community. By telling the story of one man’s struggles and triumphs in an underground world, Pimp shows us the game doesn’t change; it just has a different swagger.

Several times during the reading of this book I wanted to remove it from my device. It’s certainly hard, cold, brutal look at the way life could be and the way it had to be for some. Finishing the book wasn’t easy, but I had to finish, much like the whole train wreck couldn’t look away. It’s a book I’ll listen to again, sometime.
The voice actor was a perfect fit as he sounded like he was the owner of the story. Props to Cary Hite for a job well done.

Simply, yes. So much love is woven through the story, from Ed Grimly to Marty and Nan to their circle of friends, it’s enchanting. Hearing his words with his own voice while slipping into his different characters was, “I must, say,” unexpected yet expected. This is a story I’ll visit again and again.

This story is unoriginal, shallow, and the I’m-so-clever-sing-song tenor was difficult to hear. Read with a more dramatic voice it would have been better. They way it’s read detracts from the story.

This was a great read. When I wasn’t ‘reading’ (I have the audio book) I was wondering what next would happen to the characters in this book. The voice of Miller, the teen boy was actually pretty perfect, even though it was a woman’s voice. I’m ready for the next.
