Story
Diana Helmuth, thirty-three, is skeptical of organized religion. She is also skeptical of disorganized religion. But, more than anything, she is tired of God being dead. So, she decides to try on the fastest-growing, self-directed faith in America: Witchcraft. The result is 366 days of observation, trial, error, wit, and back spasms. Witches today are often presented as confident and finished, proud and powerful. Diana is eager to join them. She wants to follow all the rules, memorize all the incantations, and read all the liturgy. But there’s one glaring problem.

A authentic take on a fool’s journey.

The author did what I did. Fumbled and stumbled. Doubted herself and surprised herself. Made magic and didn’t even see it materialize. Discounted it when it happened and was grateful that it did. Maybe she doesn’t think of herself as a witch but she is a very good human.

Story
Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job.

An unexpected mystery in a tale of empathy.

Well. I enjoyed this story and the characters on a heart level. I cared what happened to Molly and Juan Manuel. I found myself cringing and wincing because I felt for Molly. An unexpected ending brought a smile. Never saw it coming and I routinely see it coming. Excellent job Ms. Prose…..

Story
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

Interesting history an honest attempt to entertain.

I liked this novel in general but I did not connect with any of the characters. I was most attracted to the conversation about how the members if the family connected to nature and the sea. I felt that there were too many secrets and none of the people truly knew each other.
