Claw Back from the Brink
Reviewed: 11-13-23
I went looking for a series in the Apocalyptic Genre, and the first book delivered.
In this second book, things are still dire but Black Mountain is rebuilding itself, establishing society and clawing back from the Brink. But what happens when an unelected government claiming to be the United States Government begins to "Reunify" the country? Tensions rise and rumors of war abound, and the Brink threatens to reassert itself.
This book begins to drift away from Apocalyptic, and into the realm of war and politics. It does so in a tasteful manner that calls on the ideals of civility in war, and the desperation of survival.
At times this book had me on the edge of tears, smiling with delight for the characters, and angry at other characters. Any book and performance that can evoke emotion is always worth the time spent with it.
As an extra note, because there is much talk about it. This book was obviously written from the perspective of a more Traditional Right leaning viewpoint on America. While this is sometimes apparent in the views of the characters, more time is spent discussing the ideals of Democracy and War Time ethics than political leanings.
Do not let political leanings keep you from this fantastic story of a society working together to claw back from the Brink.

Read as a Kid, Listening as an Adult
Reviewed: 10-06-22
These books were my go to when I was a kid in school, there is so much excitement and adventure packed into an easy to digest package. After listening to lengthier Adult focused novels, I was ready to enjoy the simplicity of a Rangers Apprentice book.
Enjoyable to listen to, exciting to visualize.

My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

An excellent journey as Patrick Rothfuss continues to tell the story of Kvoth, and the many adventures he gets himself in to.
My gripe would be that it feels like there is so much still left untold, and no sight of when the next book will be out.

Story
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

A Horrific Tale of a Realistic Future
Reviewed: 05-01-19
One Second After is a Post "Apocalyptic" story basing itself in a realistic dystopian future. In the book an unsuspecting America is hit by an Electro Magnetic Pulse that renders most modern technology fried. The story continues to tell of the horrors of an America whose population can only be sustained with Modern Technology, reverting back to something from the 1500's. At times the book is very preachy about the realistic possibility of EMP, and how it is not being focused on as it should be. The lesson is a good one, if not laid on a little thick. It does not beat around the bush, and there is no mis-interpreting the message the author was going for.
The story is often times gripping, and horrific. As a father, the realities that the main character John has to overcome with his family is heart wrenching and terrifying. I was not comfortable listening to this book.
I would recommend this book, but not to the faint of heart. There are chapters of the book that will make you want to stop listening, purely because of the thoughts and images that will come to you. Listener be warned.

As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.
