Story
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Phenomenal book

This is one of the best book I have ever listened to; I learned so much about the Civil War and Ulysses Grant that I am am flabbergasted. The writing and reading are crisp, clear and engaging. It is very long but this was a truly remarkable man in an amazing time. His role in helping blacks and the healing of the country are not widely known. Everyone should listen to this book!!

Story
Light in August features some of Faulkner’s most memorable characters: guileless, dauntless Lena Grove, in search of the father of her unborn child; Reverend Gail Hightower, who is plagued by visions of Confederate horsemen; and Joe Christmas, a desperate, enigmatic drifter consumed by his mixed ancestry.

Excellent audio reading

I have read all of Faulkner’s books, many several times. I decided to use my Audible membership to listen to this amazing work and am glad that I did! The reading was superb and very dramatic. The novel may stun some readers by it’s raciness but in our day of pornography I doubt it will offend many. The writing can be very challenging at times to comprehend but like the reading of Shakespeare will richly reward the persistent and curios listener or reader. I highly recommend this Audible book!

The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume 1 begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

Marvelous but terribly sad story about the Civil War and the men who fought in it. It brings to life the battles and battle fields from both sides. I’m thankful that the author has put so much into this splendid work!

Story
William Faulkner was the greatest American novelist of the 20th century, yet he lived a life marked by a pervasive sense of failure. Throughout his career, he remained haunted by his inability to master a series of personal and professional challenges: his less-than-heroic military career; the loss of his brother in an airplane crash; a disappointing stint as a Hollywood screenwriter; and a destructive bout with alcoholism.

This audio book is great! I think anyone listening to it should have a sound knowledge of what Faulkner wrote. I have read almost all of his writings. This book analyzed what drove Faulkner to become who he became. Excellent job!’

This is another wonderful book by Richard Rohr. He is a loving compassionate man who has a lot to teach us. He uses the life of Saint Francis of Assisi to teach us about how to let go of things and live a fuller life. I recommend it highly regardless of your religious beliefs.

In the summer of 1944, a handpicked group of young GIs - including such future luminaries as Bill Blass, Ellsworth Kelly, Arthur Singer, Victor Dowd, Art Kane, and Jack Masey - landed in France to conduct a secret mission. Armed with truckloads of inflatable tanks, a massive collection of sound-effects records, and more than a few tricks up their sleeves, their job was to create a traveling road show of deception on the battlefields of Europe, with the German Army as their audience.

Very interesting story about the use of deception to fool the Nazis in the war to help save Allied lives. Fun to listen to; well done in the retelling.
