Most of us hide. We play small and don't live up to our full potential. Sam Acho was one of those people. As an NFL linebacker, for example, he earned his MBA but told no one because he was afraid of what people might think if they found out that he cared about things that weren't "normal" for his profession. After many years of hiding himself, the person he had become had no connection to the real Sam.

Revisado: 02-24-24
From chapter 1 I was all in. Full disclosure, I’m not a football person and knew nothing about Sam Acho prior to this book; although his name did sound familiar. What I know about football and what I learned about the NFL from this book is night and day. I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about that. Regardless of my naivety of football, I was moved to tears on several occasions as I found myself relating to many of Sam’s experiences. Kudos to Sam for writing such a well thought out, transparent, and inspirational story. I came across this book at such a perfect time - a time when I’m trying hard to not run and hide despite feeling like I’m not being seen even when I don’t.

OMG! I was not expecting what I got with this one. This book is wild and crazy, but in a good way. Stefanie Foo weaves together an emotional yet reflective story of resilience, courage, and hope.

What an amazing story. I could not stop listening. Ever chapter revealed a new detail that added to the richness of the story. It was like peeling away the layers of an onion.

I’ll be re-reading this book again
Revisado: 02-15-23
This is definitely what I would consider a “self-help” book. I must admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started listening. It was difficult to stay attentive, but that’s because it’s not a novel or story of any kind. The Grieving Brain is more an explanation of what happens when during grief and grieving.
I’m glad I found this book. Every year around the anniversaries of my fathers passing, I experience sever depression. I plan to re-read this book to remind me of how my brain is processing the loss of my father. Hopefully it will help break the cycle.

Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

I found this story to be weird. Who would ever want to live in such a society. Not recommended for those who are paranoid. May be perfect for those who believe in conspiracy theories.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

I don’t have the words to describe how heavy this book is. The reality of childhood stardom is not something I envy. This book unpacks so much of the behind the scenes real life struggles of so many child actors/actresses. Brace yourself. Jeannette McCurdy gives a detail account of her life as a child actress.

This book is for serious change agents. It’s more than just words to read/listen to. It’s a collection of thought provoking questions, self-reflection, and action items. Anyone interested in changing the culture of their work place should read this book. Highly recommended for book clubs and anti-racist working groups.

Slow start. Exciting middle. Lame ending.
Revisado: 09-25-21
Overall I think this was a fascinating story. For a science nerd as myself and someone who does genetic research I was drawn to this book from the cover and title alone. However, it took me a while to get into the story. The intro is kind of long, but makes sense given what’s to come.
The author does a good job with chat hyper development and setting the stage for a love story based on science and algorithms. My biggest disappointment is the ending. Honestly I would love a book 2.
