Ridiculous heroine and clueless hero
Reviewed: 09-15-24
This was the most frustrating, ridiculous storyline I have encountered in some time. It may have been the narrator, who was execrable by the way, but the heroine comes across as a dumb, senseless, directionless child who is a coward and only recourse of action is to beg to get what she wants. Oliver is an idiot. Why would he want someone who lies to him over and over again. He can’t seem to see her for who she is.
This one should go somewhere and think about what it has done.. lol. In the meantime, I look forward to the next story. I haven’t given up on this author yet. I actually liked the first book.

I liked this book. It didn’t have enough romance but the characters and storyline were great. It was captivating and exciting. The narrator was not bad and interesting to listen to. I’m going to read the next book.

Story
A series of stepfathers and a difficult childhood have left Fletcher “Grey” Pryde, fifth duke of Greycourt, with a guarded heart, enviable wealth, and the undeserved reputation of a rogue. Grey’s focus on expanding his dukedom allows him little time to find a wife. But when his mother is widowed yet again and he meets the charmingly unconventional woman managing his stepfather’s funeral, he’s shocked to discover how much they have in common. Still, Grey isn’t interested in love, no matter how pretty, or delightfully outspoken, the lady....

So So

I don’t like to be too critical of a book because I couldn’t write one and I’m impressed by a writer’s ability to tell a coherent story. So this is a sort of comparison review to other novels that I have read in this genre. Compared to other romantic lead characters, I think Grey is sort of slow. He is probably the dumbest duke I have ever read about. But if you put into perspective that he is a wounded 10 year old inside, I can give him the benefit of the doubt, I guess. I just find that these characters ( Bea and Grey) fell in love too fast. I can understand an instant attraction but it seems that there wasn’t enough substance to their attraction to justify them having sex so soon, especially with Bea having been traumatized by her uncle’s harassment. Also, the sex is too much and overdone. It’s not necessary to be so explicit more than one time in the story or at all. The sex is more of a focus than the development of the relationship.
It is too convenient for Grey’s insecurities to be overcome by a few words from his mom. And Bea is too accepting of his mistrust. I just didn’t like the whole relationship. This was more like a porn film. The basic plot is just a reason to let the characters have sex. Sorry.

I won’t gush or ramble about this series of books. As a matter of fact, I wasn’t even going to read the series even though I love M C Beaton. Well, just let me say this. I cried like a baby when it was over and I miss Hannah already!
Oh and Helen Lisanti is a treasure! A definite “Must Read” as much for the history of the period as for the adventure.

Pleasantly Surprised
Reviewed: 03-26-20
I am bored for good reading and for good readers, especially in the romance genre. I am all out of good authors and I have read and reread the ones I love ad nauseam, So I randomly picked this book from the recommendations section. I find that I can always tell the quality of the storytelling by listening to the first sentence that comes out of the narrator's mouth. If I can stomach the reader, then I am willing to listen to the story.
Kate Reading is the narrator for this book and when I started listening to the book, I glimpsed an oasis across the dried desert of my listening experience. LOL. She is awesome. The story came to life as she read. The characters are vivid and lifelike, Mia Vincy's story, which is surprisingly witty and funny, had me wanting more and more. Joshua is exceptional and Cassandra is lovely. I was willing to tag along as they discovered each other and was rooting for them all the way.
I recommend this book for those who are looking for a well written romance that is funny and engaging. Beware though! The story is a bit long and begs to be ended sooner but with writing and narration as well done as this, I was willing to suffer a bit.

If you could sum up A Breath of Snow and Ashes in three words, what would they be?
O...M...G!
What did you like best about this story?
Jamie Fraser
What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?
Everything. How can one person perform an entire saga of 7 books and make each character believable. I love this woman. She is a genius. Think of it this way. There are let's say at least 50 characters in this book ( I know there are many more) but she gives a voice, personality and life to each and every one. Who can do that?? She is absolutely one of the best readers that I have heard read an audio book.
If you could take any character from A Breath of Snow and Ashes out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Jamie Fraser. He is honest and forthright, loyal and loves with an intensity that only a made-up romantic character can. This guy doesn't exist but Lord I wish he did.
Any additional comments?

Story
The year is 1772, and the rift between Britain and its American colonies has put a frightening word into the minds of all concerned: revolution. In the backwoods of North Carolina, violence has already reared its ugly head, as cabins have been burned to the ground. To preserve the colony for King George III, the governor pleads with Jamie to bring the people together and restore peace. But Jamie has the privilege, although some might call it a burden, of knowing that war cannot be avoided.
