Story
For GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton, McAlpine Lodge seems like the ideal getaway to celebrate their honeymoon. Set on a gorgeous, off-the-grid mountaintop property, it’s the perfect place to unplug and reconnect. Until a bone-chilling scream cuts through the night. Mercy McAlpine, the manager of the Lodge, is dead. With a vicious storm raging and the one access road to the property washed out, the murderer must be someone on the mountain. But as Will and Sara investigate the McAlpine family and the other guests, they realize that everyone here is lying.

From one of Outside magazine's "Literary All-Stars" comes the thrilling true tale of the fastest boat ride ever, down the entire length of the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, during the legendary flood of 1983. In the spring of 1983, massive flooding along the length of the Colorado River confronted a team of engineers at the Glen Canyon Dam with an unprecedented emergency that may have resulted in the most catastrophic dam failure in history.

At the dawn of the genetics revolution, our DNA is becoming as readable, writable, and hackable as our information technology. Metzl has gathered facts on genomic research. The future of reproduction is upon us.
The ability to edit the human genome while still in embryo stage is very impressive. Think of curing cystic fibrosis and hemophilia before the embryo is implanted. A miracle.
I give it the highest recommendation

Story
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Boring Travelogue
Reviewed: 05-30-19
I can't recommend this book. It is a history of Marietta, Ohio ... from the beginning. I have every book written by this author and enjoyed each of them. This is very different from his other books. McCullough apparently sent his researchers out to find the journals of the early settlers to Ohio and he quotes the journals extensively. Where did they go, how did they get there, who died along the way, what did they eat on Thursday, whose daughter did they marry, and on and on and on and on.
If you are from Marietta you might enjoy. Otherwise, stay away. I won't pre-order McCullough's next book.

This classic expose of the Fed has become one of the best-selling books in its category of all time. Where does money come from? Where does it go? Who makes it? The money magician's secrets are unveiled. Here is a close look at their mirrors and smoke machines, the pulleys, cogs, and wheels that create the grand illusion called money. A boring subject? Just wait. You'll be hooked in five minutes. It reads like a detective story - which it really is, but it's all true.

Numerous factual errors
Reviewed: 12-10-18
I am not a fan of the Federal Reserve System. I bought this book to learn about its history. However, numerous factual errors make me doubt everything in the book. For example, the author claims FDIC is a government bail out program for banks and that when the FDIC closes a bank, that is a bail out that preserves capital for investors. This is not so. When FDIC closes a bank, investors (share holders) lose their investment. The bank is sold to another management group and continues operation. Banks who are insured by FDIC are assessed monthly fees that cover the operation of the FDIC.
The Fed and Congress bailed out the large investment banks in the 2008 financial crisis. FDIC was brought into after the fact when the large investment houses were allowed into FDIC.
