Story
From the New York Times best-selling author of A Legacy of Spies. "Haven't you realized that only appearances matter"? The British Embassy in Bonn is up in arms. Her Majesty's financially troubled government is seeking admission to Europe's Common Market just as anti-British factions are rising to power in Germany. Rioters are demanding reunification, and the last thing the Crown can afford is a scandal. Then Leo Harting - an embassy nobody - goes missing with a case full of confidential files.

A Four Hour Story Crammed Into 13 Hours
Reviewed: 10-02-22
le Carré's style is quite verbose, but this was excessive. Conversations that go on 20 minutes longer than necessary and irrelevant lengthy descriptions move the story along at a snails pace.

If you could sum up The Burning Room in three words, what would they be?
Better Narrator Needed
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes. There were several twists that finally resolved in the end.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He was Joe Friday personified. Very even tone and emphasis. Had trouble keeping my attention to the story.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Two crimes. How many criminals?
Any additional comments?
Enjoyed the story. Typical Harry Bosch. Stubborn, steadfast, defiant Harry plows along to solve the almost forgotten crimes.

A great story with lots of twists and excitement.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The mayor, Penn Cage. He's a smart, determined, strong character who also has weaknesses and self doubts.
Which character – as performed by Dick Hill – was your favorite?
The same.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Nasty in Natchez
Any additional comments?
If you play Dick Hill at double speed, the novel moves along nicely and you won't fall asleep.

Dick Hill is Slow
Reviewed: 07-12-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes. Get a different narrator.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Wallander. He is a complex, clever, and troubled man who is dogged in his pursuit of a solution.
Did Dick Hill do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes, he did. But he reads so slowly. I'm now listening to one of his other "reads", The Devil's Punchbowl, by Greg Isles. I put it on 2x speed and it's wonderful. He's much better at 2x. His characterizations are excellent at this speed. At 1x I kept saying, "Come on, come on!" Now it's perfect.
Could you see Sidetracked being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Wallander on Masterpiece Mystery. 'Nough said.
Any additional comments?
I'll be listening to Dick Hill at 2x from now on. More Wallander for me.

Any additional comments?
Michael Connelly's Bosch in Nine Dragons is a one sided character until the very end. In previous novels, he was a thinking, reflective investigator who had a certain tenacity in his approach to solving crimes. This time he's all tenacity.
