Story
In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.

I wouldn't say it's a scary book but it's definitely eerie and unsettling. It's one of those books that stays with you for a while after reading it. I enjoyed it a lot but also found it hard to shake.

Story
Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life, does not appeal. Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there, either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

terrible narration
Reviewed: 11-22-21
I really wanted to enjoy this book but I couldn't get past the terrible narration. The narrator makes the lead characters sound like petulant teenagers and it's just awful. I can't say anything about the story itself as I had only gotten a few chapters in, but I ended up having to return the book.

I enjoyed this a lot and got some great tips on manifesting and just living a more spiritual life in general.
