I had been waiting for Don Winslow's latest for some time and he does not not disappoint. I had listened to the Power of the Dog and The Cartel and loved them. You can listen to The Border even if you have not gone through the other two. This book brings home the connection between Mexican drug cartel money, banks, large corporations and politicians. You are guaranteed to have some 'Aha!"moments when Winslow explains these connections. He ties all these things to what is going on in our world today. There is a wonderful tension throughout that will keep whatever device you use to listen working overtime. The characters are incredibly real...you will recognize all the players. Thank you, Mr. Winslow

Story
Broadway takes us on a mile-by-mile journey that traces the gradual evolution of the 17th century's Brede Wegh, a muddy cow path in a backwater Dutch settlement, to the 20th century's Great White Way. We learn why one side of the street was once considered more fashionable than the other; witness construction of the Ansonia Apartments, Trinity Church, and the Flatiron Building and the burning of P. T. Barnum's American Museum; and discover that Columbia University was built on the site of an insane asylum.

Wow! I grew up in NYC and learned a bit about the history of NYC but this is the mother lode as far as Broadway is concerned. There is so much history that relates to the main street of NYC. The book divides Broadway into approximate miles and each section is chock full of fascinating history and a wealth of anecdotes about the famous and "near" famous. The history of each mile comes right up to the present day. Kevin Pariseau is excellent as narrator. The book will leave you wondering how Fran Leadon found so much information and put it together in such an entertaining way.

Mother American Night is the wild, funny, heartbreaking, and often unbelievable (yet completely true) story of an American icon. Born into a powerful Wyoming political family, John Perry Barlow wrote the lyrics for thirty Grateful Dead songs while also running his family’s cattle ranch. He hung out in Andy Warhol’s Factory, went on a date with the Dalai Lama’s sister, and accidentally shot Bob Weir in the face on the eve of his own wedding. Despite being a freely self-confessed acidhead, he served as Dick Cheney’s campaign manager during Cheney’s first run for Congress.

John Perry Barlow has had the opportunity to do what we wished we could have done as baby boomers. He was involved in so many aspects of things going on in our lifetime that it is mind boggling. If he had just worked with the Dead we would have been impressed but he was involved in so much more. Kudos to Bob Greenfield for writing the stories that he spoke to Barlow about. His other works have distinguished him as a talent for bringing out what is amazing about his subjects.

How does Don Winslow do it? He opened up the drug cartels in The Power Of The Dog and The Cartel and we listened to amazing readers as we learned how drugs became a force to be reckoned with in today's world. Now he opens up the seamy side of the NYPD. The chapter with the title I gave to this review had me listening with my mouth open. Dion Graham is a most talented reader. He perfectly captures the language of NYC from the Upper West Side all the way to Staten Island and we gain insight that newspapers only allude to. An eye opener that I loved.

A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality: the black Chinese restaurant.

This week a Mexican drug kingpin escaped from a maximum security prison in Mexico. This is life imitating art. This scenario takes place near the beginning of Don Winslow's novel and the excitement level remains incredibly high throughout the book. It is eye opening when we learn what has taken place in Mexico throughout the War On Drugs from 2004-2012. I loved The Power Of The Dog but you do not have to read it to enjoy The Cartel. I guarantee you will become a Don Winslow fan and you will be delighted with his other books . The narration by Ray Porter is incredible with a variety of voices and accents. Well done!!

Any additional comments?
I read The Day Of The Jackal in the early 1970s and The Odessa File a couple of years later and I was amazed. I have not read Forsyth since then and last week a friend spoke about this book. Frederick Forsyth can still create a timely story and keep you sitting in your car to find out what will happen next. He is deserving of a "Driveway Moments" award for keeping you so riveted that you are reluctant to get out of the car. This is a great book for George Guidall because he gets to use his talents for voices of many nationalities.

I have known about this book for decades but just got to it. I have been intrigued with the Leopold and Loeb case since my school days and I am so glad I listened. Not only is this incredibly well written but the narration is as good as it gets. The summation of the lawyers at the trial could be the most emotional piece of writing and narrating I have experienced in a novel.

You Know Him But You Don't Know him
Reviewed: 03-12-13
What we learned about Thomas Jefferson when we were younger is cursory at best. Here, in detail, and clearly written is the story of one of our most important Americans. Whatever political party you favor you can support Jefferson because he touched on all aspects of American life in a way that made this country stronger. Meacham makes clear that Jefferson always had the country in mind in all decisions and that puts him above "politicians" of today.
Edward Hermann's narration adds a great deal to a well researched and well written book.
