Story
It's been 17 months since the Bloodsmith butchered his first victim, and Operation Maypole is still no nearer catching him. The media is whipping up a storm, and the top brass are demanding results, but the investigation is sinking fast. Now isn't the time to get distracted with other cases, but Detective Sergeant Lucy McVeigh doesn't have much choice. When Benedict Strachan was just 11, he hunted down and killed a homeless man. No one's ever figured out why Benedict did it, but now, after 16 years, he's back on the streets again.

Story
On the first day of her new job, Harris is called to the scene of a brutal murder at the heart of Surrey society. A shocking crime, with a meticulous killer: the victim’s eyes have been removed and the body drained of blood, with no forensic evidence left at the scene. Her boss insists it must be the return of a killer who escaped justice several years ago, leaving a trail of bloody ritualistic killings. Harris isn’t so sure: both sets of victims have had their eyes removed, but other details are significantly different.

I loved the story, but the lack of inflection and emotion of the narrators voice almost made me lose interest. Still going to listen to book 2 though…

Yes the book is about solving a murder, but JD brings the characters to life, they feel like real people I want to catch up with in every book! And yes that Scottish sarcasm gets me every time!
I work from home with this audio book playing in my ear. My kids kept coming in and looking at me weird, because I was laughing so uncontrollably.
Another perfect performance by Angus of course!

Story
DS Hutton returns in a blisteringly brutal crime novel that obliterates the line between thriller and horror, and elevates the Hutton series to the upper echelons of contemporary noir fiction. Three people are dead. Murdered. Each one bound and gagged in a forest, the top of the skull removed, their exposed brain picked at by crows. If they were lucky, they died quickly. DS Hutton has been on sick leave for several months, living on the side of a Scottish mountain. However, the Plague of Crows has arrived, all hands are on deck and Hutton is summoned back to duty.

A Bit too “Dark”
Reviewed: 08-30-21
I really liked the first book, but this one went down a really dark and disturbing path 🥴. Descriptions were very graphic- maybe a little less of that? I just had to finish it though.
The ending felt like it was thrown together at the last second - it ended so quickly after they found the suspect. I would have liked more of a bang at the end after all the tension working up to it.
I am still a fan & want to find out how the main character recovers & overcomes his demons.
I look forward to your next book, 🤞less gore in it.
