Not what I expected, and very heavy on the “god” aspect
Reviewed: 05-04-22
I am a longtime fan of Pete, his comedy, his TV shows, and his podcast. I liked hearing his story in some more detail, and just listening to him talk for a while, but I did not find the content of this book very interesting or entertaining on the whole. If you don’t have some existing relationship with religion or spirituality, and if you’re not interested in / looking for that, then I’d definitely recommend skipping this book.

The lives of the Barretts, a normal suburban New England family, are torn apart when 14-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of acute schizophrenia. To her parents' despair, the doctors are unable to stop Marjorie's descent into madness. graphic and grotesque imagery
Reviewed: 10-24-18
I never write book reviews, but wanted to give other readers a heads up about this one. I was looking for a spooky October read and picked this one, thinking it was going to have mounting psychological terror, akin to Haunting of Hill House. That is NOT what this book is. The tone is fairly upbeat because it is narrated primarily by a child, and the real 'horror' seems to come from disturbing and grotesque imagery. And FYI it gets sexually graphic in a pretty gross way pretty early on, so might not be suitable for some readers. It got too gross for me and was not what I was looking for so I didn't even finish the read - which I never do.
If you are looking for a horror novel that uses gross graphic imagery to get scares (which I grant is totally up some people's alley, and that's fine!), this might be for you. If you're looking for the slow-burn psychological terror novel, you will probably want to look elsewhere.

Story
Twentysomething Hollis Kessler languishes in a hopelessly magician-less world (with the exception of a fleet-footed nymph named Xanthe) not too far from where he graduated college. His friends do, too. They sleep late, read too much, drink too much, talk too much, and work and earn and do way too little. But Hollis does have an obsession: There's another world going on in his head, a world of excitement and danger and starships and romance, and it's telling him that it's time to stop dreaming and get serious.

Loved Magicians, but this was unbearable
Reviewed: 03-23-17
I am a huge huge fan of the entire Magicians trilogy, so I thought I'd give this early book from Lev Grossman a shot. To be perfectly honest, it was one of the most boring uninteresting books I've ever read in my life. The characters were all formulaic and generally unlikeable, and absolutely nothing happened. On top of that, I found the split voice narration style quite annoying. I strongly urge you to avoid this book. If you're desperate for more Magicians, just go back and re-read The Magicians!
