I first read this story in Paper Back in the 70’s and it’s just as exciting and engaging in the car forty years on. Well written, crafted characters, good solid story telling at its best. And the subject matter is so clever and engaging. Still one of the best stories I have ever experienced. Really, it’s that good.

This book is not for the casual history browser. Toland has produced an excellent account of the last 100 days of WWII from all standpoints with a political and strategic view I have rarely ever seen. I was a reluctant convert from the coffee table accounts that are so popular, this account exceeds them all. I have more than 1000 books now, this must be in the top 5. If you are a true military history buff, enjoy erudite and scholarly paragraphs with challenging insight, this book is for you. Get it and enjoy.

Where does The Snow Goose (BBC Radio 4: Classic Serial) rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Out of more that 1000 other books , in the top 5

A piece of salted caramel so beautifully bitter-sweet that it will bring tears to your eyes or you have no heart. What a story of beauty and joy, the warm enchanting conclusion your left with that in some world somewhere, in the end, no matter the problem, it will be OK. The story is like warm coco. Or getting into a warm bed on a very cold night. It’s a delight, there, that’s all I can say. Get it. And enjoy a story, you will I assure you be sharing the story with your family for generations.

What can I say. I have all 3 seasons but it great. The story is creative and hilarious, add the Dickensian style and it just gets funnier. The language is sharp and witty and you often miss a joke for the sheer slickness of the delivery. If you like sharp clever language you will love this. A bit like Stephen Fry on speed. And goodness, the Admiral on his flagship, the HMS Ggghhhrrrrrr !!! Get it and annoy your colleagues with the best one liners ever. The books are comic genius, I know, I have spent so long looking for something like this.

I can not praise this book enough. It was recommended to me and on speck I used one of my credits and could not turn it off for 3 days. The science alone is gripping but the problem solving, the grandeur of the story, the professionalism of all the characters. Well done again and again. I have a feeling this will always be a one off book, never again possible, but get it, switch on and love it.

What did you love best about And We Shall Shock Them?

It is had to do justice to this book in a short paragraph but I will try. It’s a soldier’s history, written by an author who understood to well the machinations often associated with battles. And you can see in your head the map changing and the divisions moving about to meet the luck of battle. You get to see the picture from the Army Corp all the way down, dancing so seamlessly between the memoir's of a corporal to the logistical issues facing a Brigadier and yet always kept in the picture. One of the best works of British task to arms I have ever read. I cannot paradise this book highly enough. It would seem there is a new player on the block for popular military history and he is exceptional.I have just started ‘Alan Brooke’ and am not being disappointed.

Would you listen to Battle again? Why?
Mr Toland needs congratulations on what is a great read. So well researched and animated in a way many popular historians have not been able to do with such skill. I know the battle well (Soldier for 23 years), and who has ever done Staff College without the 'Bulge'. American arms growing up and entering world history with thunder and courage. It was a great battle and has never been praised enough for the sheer courage and professionalism of American Armies. For that is what we are talking about, a clash of titanic proportion and infantry losses 3x that of the Eastern Front. Again, well done Mr Toland I would love to chat with you one day on certain points, but if you are a history buff and want a story to tell the 'Spartans' this is the one to get. (And I apologize for the crass and churlish outpourings from Field Marshal Montgomery bringing shame to so many British Tommies who bled and died next to their American brothers)

What did you love best about Alanbrooke?

Alan Brook was at the very centre of decisions made in every theatre in WWII. He was a thoughtful and educated man with an excellent strategic mind. The book paints very well the circumstance, the evidence and finally the decision. It’s a fascinating insight into the man who gave the nod to world changing events and the advice he gave on why he did. Its well researched, its well written and an excellent company. I would advise it to any history buff's looking for a demanding picture of the relationship between senior military men and senior politicians and the fine line they both much tread.

So many say there is so little left to see in WWII. It has been all said before. But I would say people like Kershaw bring a revisionist eye to what we now know happened with the release of so many parliamentary papers. Why did the whole Nazi edifice hold together even when it was doomed. Why could the US, UK, French, Australian etc in the west just not move forward as expected by the generals and ultimately why did the German people not just throw in the towel? Just say enough is enough.

It's an excellent and scholarly achievement. Well done. Having listened once already I have already started to listen again. (And being a member since 1996 I have many 100's to select from and this is one of the best)

As a historian and a professional soldier I found this book to be fascinating on so many levels. It could have been written by a general of WWII. It has depth, strategic insight and explanation and a cold calculated analysis of why it all went so wrong so fast for the German Army. Well recommended.
