Not what it seems

This book is about Covid. I wish I knew that before I used a credit on it. I feel like the title description is a big fib. I don’t want to give the plot away, but this book is not what is described. Also, I really wish authors would keep their political affiliations to themselves. I listen to get away from everyday life, not to be scolded by an author. She says that Covid is not a political issue, then turns it into one. I usually really like this author, so I didn’t read the reviews. I wish I had because I would have stayed away from this book.

Story
The new vicar had never wanted a picture-postcard parish - or a huge and haunted vicarage. Nor had she wanted to walk into a dispute over a controversial play about a 17th-century clergyman accused of witchcraft...a story that certain long-established families would rather remained obscure. But this is Ledwardine, steeped in cider and secrets...a paradise of cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. And also - as Merrily Watkins and her teenage daughter, Jane, discover - a village where horrific murder is a tradition that spans centuries.

Jumped from scene to scene

There was no distinction between one scene and another, which made things a little confusing. I had to rewind several times to figure out what was going on. This story could have been told in half the time. Parts of it may have been setting up for the next book, but I don’t think I will be finding out, because I have no desire to waste a credit on continuing the series. This was a very tedious book.

Plant based diet
Reviewed: 09-29-23
This book would have been so much better if the main character hadn’t drone on about her most -of- the -time, but not always any based diet. That and her fear of guns. It was repetitive and monotonous ( see what I did there?) over all good story, but I will not be purchasing any of the other books in the series because of that.

I could tell when I started listening to this book that it was written decades ago. That being said, it is an easy listen, and you don’t have to pay a lot of attention to the plot. It is very predictable and a little trite. The narrator speaks slowly and does a pretty good job with the different characters’ voices, but many times during listening, I found my myself asking, “Why?” If you are looking for background noise, this is a good book for that.

It was all i could do to finish this book because of the narrator. Her voice made all of the females sound like vapid idiots. The only reason i kept listening is because the story was pretty good, and i wanted to find out what happened. If i see this narrator’s name again, i will avoid that book!

Story
Back in college, Jane Lewis would have given anything to be like homecoming queen Connie Bryan. Instead she was just Plain Jane - overweight, frumpy, and painfully shy. That was then. Today, a lovely and confident Dr. Jane Lewis has a thriving psychotherapy practice, her own radio talk show, a beautiful old Louisiana mansion, and her affectionate, nutty dog, Olive, to keep her company. The only thing missing is someone to share her life.

Narrator ruins the story

Good story, but the narrator make the lead female into a whiny mess. Her voices for the other characters is fine, but I wanted to faceplam every time the lead character’s voice came on. Also, there were time when the narrator rushed through sentences to a new scene, which made things a little confusing. There is a strong Christian theme, so if you don’t like that, this is not the book for you

A narrator can make or break a story
Reviewed: 09-24-22
I struggled to finish this book, because the narrator was horrible. No pauses between paragraphs or for punctuation. She didn’t use the same voice for the different characters throughout the book, which made it a bit difficult to remember who was suppose to be speaking. I tried slowing and speeding up the narrative, but neither really worked. The story is ok, but i don’t think I will be looking for another by the same author. It got very repetitive. I chose the book, because, like the main character, I have recently lost my mother. I thought maybe I could identify with her and maybe find a bit of solace in the book. I did a little, but not much.
