Story
1938: She was one of the six sparkling Mitford sisters, known for her stinging quips, stylish dress, and bright green eyes. But Nancy Mitford’s seemingly dazzling life was really one of turmoil: with a perpetually unfaithful and broke husband, two Nazi sympathizer sisters, and her hopes of motherhood dashed forever. With war imminent, Nancy finds respite by taking a job at the Heywood Hill Bookshop in Mayfair, hoping to make ends meet, and discovers a new life.

Capturing an era through a life
Reviewed: 01-31-25
It was a compelling “read.” The story sheds light on the fascinating Mitford sisters and through a deep-dive into Nancy Mitford’s life. If you enjoy reading about Europe in the 30’s and 40’s and hanging out with interesting, strong characters, you’ll like this piece of historical fiction.
The narrator for Nancy Mitford was especially good.

Story
From New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson comes his first venture into fiction, an otherworldly tale of intrigue and the impossible that marshals his trademark approach to nonfiction to create something new: a ghost story thoroughly grounded in history. Pioneering psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family inexplicably vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world...or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work?
