Story
Shane Collins, a world-weary CIA spy, is ready to come in from the cold. Stationed in Bahrain off the coast of Saudi Arabia for his final tour, he has little use for his mission—uncovering Iranian support for the insurgency against the monarchy. Then Collins meets Almaisa, a beautiful and enigmatic artist, and his eyes are opened to a side of Bahrain most expats never experience, to questions he never thought to ask.

Misogyny too much to take
Reviewed: 06-19-24
I selected this because it was an Edgar winner. However, the misogyny was so pervasive I couldn’t finish.

Story
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Man knows best, women don’t know what’s good for them
Reviewed: 11-04-23
I kept listening thinking that the book would get better but it never did. The characters were 2 dimensional and the author makes it clear that women don’t know what’s good for them and just need a man to take over. The language was unimaginative too. Not worth a credit.

As a successful book publicist, Imani Lewis works night and day to promote her authors. So when her grandmother invites her to stay for the summer as she recovers from surgery, Imani happily agrees. Zander Matthews wakes up every day determined to enjoy the present because he knows from his time in the Marines that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. So they agree to a deal: he’ll help Imani fix up her grandmother’s house as long as they stay firmly in the friend zone.

Simile addiction
Reviewed: 05-20-22
The story isn’t bad but the author’s steady flow of similes served as such a distraction from the story that it was difficult to stay engaged.
