Story
After the killing of a prominent mob lawyer, NYPD homicide detectives Jacob Jackson and Caitlin Grimes start receive chilling, written “rules” for how to commit the perfect murder. "Rule number one for the perfect murder: Evidence is your enemy. Leave none behind." Jackson (Reid Scott) and Grimes (Cobie Smulders) race to find the killer, setting them on a collision course with the city’s crime underbelly, and a perpetrator who seems happy to toy with them. “Rule number two. No crimes of passion. The perfect murder is always business, never pleasure.”

Another great listen with an interesting storyline. I love the variety of actors playing different parts like an old radio play. Really enjoyed the mystery.

Not feeling the characters

Good premise and well read but the characters never felt real or believable to me. Didn’t really care what happened to them, didn’t buy any of the relationships and the whole thing just felt flat and emotionless.

Special Agent Pendergast arrives at an exclusive Colorado ski resort to rescue his protégée, Corrie Swanson, from serious trouble with the law. His sudden appearance coincides with the first attack of a murderous arsonist who - with brutal precision - begins burning down multimillion-dollar mansions with the families locked inside. After springing Corrie from jail, Pendergast learns she made a discovery while examining the bones of several miners who were killed 150 years earlier by a rogue grizzly bear.

Corrie ruins this book for me
Reviewed: 09-22-21
While I am a Pendergast fan, I can not say the same about Corrie Swanson who is an idiot through much of the book. The storyline is moderately interesting but was overshadowed by the ridiculous decisions and behavior of Corrie. Near the end of the book I skipped entire chapters featuring her.

The two available books in this series are just a wonderful, fun read and I am desperately trying to find the pit of print third book. Dayna is a realistic woman with great friends who help her in her move from actress to PI. Just trying to make ends meet, Dayna goes after rewards offered to crimesolvers by the LAPD. She smart, driven and the author stays away from the most overworked mystery tropes and has created a fantastic heroine. I love that Dayna avoids the stupidest mistakes seen in most cozy mysteries and that she has a unique reason for investigating.

Miss Julia is a hoot!
Reviewed: 04-06-21
This book would have gotten a full 5 stars if it weren’t for the ridiculous and unbelievable plot line of the pastor and his “diagnosis”. I felt this was not at all in character for Miss Julia and detracted from the overall story. Loved the narrator! Unfortunately she does not read the remainder of the series and the newer narrator has a horrible Miss Lillian voice that complex puts me off narration.

I was excited about this particularly because of the short length. I wanted something I could listen to before going to bed but I could not finish this because of the loud music. I am sure the affirmations are very good but the music made it hard to focus on them.

Light and occasionally annoying.
Reviewed: 10-05-19
Action and adventure mixed with history and this is a decent entry into that field. The negatives come from my finding Maddock mostly an ass. His relationships with women are high schooling and superficial. Female characters are stereotypical at best. Overall characters are one dimensional. The books are a decent listen but for more depth and better overall stories I have other go to authors. All that being said, the books aren’t bad and the action is plentiful. If you’re looking for deep character development in addition, look elsewhere.
