Story
Robert A. Heinlein wrote The Number of the Beast, which was published in 1980. In the book Zeb, Deety, Hilda, and Jake are ambushed by the alien "Black Hats" and barely escape with their lives on a specially configured vehicle (the Gay Deceiver) which can travel along various planes of existence, allowing them to visit parallel universes. However, unknown to most fans, Heinlein had already written a "parallel" novel about the four characters and parallel universes in 1977.

I like this better than Number of the Beast

I don’t like writing reviews, but after reading some already on here, I wanted to add my two cents. This is probably a early version of Number of the Beast, the beginning is the same, but I liked the differences better. I liked the morals and character of the main characters. I’m glad to get rid of the bed hopping of the first book. . I like the ending better. I have listened to this one many times more than the first one (I listen to audiobooks rather than TV when I’m doing just about anything… kinda like having the tv reruns on in the background)

Story
Navy pilot turned submarine officer Jerry Mitchell is now the navigator aboard USS Seawolf. On a reconnaissance mission deep in the Barents Sea, Mitchell and his crew prepare to watch the Russian navy as it trains for battle. Although they are outside Russia's territorial waters, the U.S. boat is ambushed by Russia's newest attack submarine, Severodvinsk. Its aggressive new captain, Aleksey Petrov, harasses the American intruder with dangerously fast, insanely close passes.

I was wishing i hadn't already read Hunt for Red October several times because i was in a mood to hear it again, and then i found this book. It was just what i was looking for. There was good character development, and enough technology, politics and navy protocols to keep things interesting. I drive truck for a living and it kept me going and alert for several days of driving. I thought it was a good solid well written book and was sad for it to end.
