Story
1926, and in a country still recovering from the Great War, London has become the focus for a delirious new nightlife. In the clubs of Soho, peers of the realm rub shoulders with starlets, foreign dignitaries with gangsters, and girls sell dances for a shilling a time. The notorious queen of this glittering world is Nellie Coker, ruthless but also ambitious to advance her six children, including the enigmatic eldest, Niven, whose character has been forged in the crucible of the Somme. But success breeds enemies, and Nellie’s empire faces threats from without and within.

Absorbing slice of history

Only it’s not homework-like history. I may listen to this all over again! Kate Atkinson did lots of research and wove it into a gripping tale with a large and memorable cast of characters.

Story
Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York’s one-percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit. Full of recognizable, loveable—if fallible—characters, it’s about the peculiar unknowability of someone else’s family, the miles between the haves and have-nots, and the insanity of first love—all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight.

Don't hold their wealth against them

I figured the characters in this would all be jerks, but, guess what? the author did an excellent job creating people who were not stereotypes or jerks, even with all that money. Quite enjoyable.
