Story
In 1929, in the blue-collar city of Portsmouth, Ohio, a company built a swimming pool the size of a football field; named Dreamland, it became the vital center of the community. Now, addiction has devastated Portsmouth, as it has hundreds of small rural towns and suburbs across America - addiction like no other the country has ever faced. How that happened is the riveting story of Dreamland.

A chilling cautionary tale of contemporary America

Any additional comments?
Fascinating and infuriating, Dreamland describes a perfect storm of unscrupulous pharmaceutical companies and opportunistic, innovative heroin gangs who combined to create an opiate addiction epidemic that continues to ravage America. I can't recommend this book enough. An expose of so many of the dysfunctions built into our nation today.

Story
Best-selling author and renowned religious scholar Karen Armstrong presents a concise and articulate history of Islam, the world's fastest-growing faith. Beginning with the Prophet Muhammad's flight from Medina and concluding with an examination of modern Islamic practices and concerns, Armstrong delivers an unbiased overview. She contends that no religion is more feared and misunderstood by the Western world as Islam, and firmly challenges the notion that these two civilizations are on a collision course.

Narrator ruined this book
Reviewed: 07-17-15
This was a good short history of Islam, that perhaps gave a generous interpretation of some parts of its history.
The narrator, however, consistently mispronounced the most common Arabic words and phrases. Yes it's a foreign language. But how can you keep pronouncing the name 'Hussein' as Hu-sign? And that wasn't the worst of it. His pronunciation was totally distracting and I sometimes got the feeling he was doing it on purpose; no one could be that ignorant. Karen Armstrong deserves better.

Great read made better by Spacek's narration
Reviewed: 03-15-15
Would you listen to To Kill a Mockingbird again? Why?
Definitely listen again mainly because of Sissy Spacek's spot-on perfect narration.
What other book might you compare To Kill a Mockingbird to and why?
I don't know what to compare it to. It's a coming-of-age story, a story of the American South, a race relations story. It is a classic book, mandatory reading in most American middle and high schools. It's just a great read made an even better listen by Spacek's narration.
Which character – as performed by Sissy Spacek – was your favorite?
I guess it must be Scout, the first-person narrator of the book. Spacek has the accent, the tone, the attitude down perfect. It was just great listening to her.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I wanted to make it last.
Any additional comments?
Spacek's narration improved for me one of my favorite books.
