People and their innocence/guilt live in areas of grey, but our biases want to classify actions so simply. I love that the plot and characters in this book push readers to think beyond what is simple and challenge us to look inward at our own biases. And if you are looking for a solid murder-mystery, this one is for you!

Trigger Warning
Reviewed: 08-02-24
Please note this book includes many triggering topics: substance abuse, child abuse, sexual abuse of minors.
With that said, I don’t know what I expected or how I feel about this book, but I believe that to be the intention of the author. There is so much grey-area that simple notions of good, bad, right, wrong become difficult to apply to the plot making it hard to easily categorize situations, again, I think that’s the point of this book. If you like to just listen to a book and go for the ride, then give it a try. But I can recognize this book isn’t for everyone.

The Manipulator. I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer. The Shadow. I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go.

Not for those with sexual abuse trauma
Reviewed: 12-27-23
I’ve read, listened to, and enjoyed graphic smut before, so I am no shrewd. The narrative of this book acknowledges the conflict between nonconsensual and consensual sex. I also understand the concept of fantasy or sex play where you are not in control or the submissive. But the line in this book is quite grey and I feel could be a trigger for some women. If nothing I have mentioned makes you take pause, feel free to proceed, but I did feel obligated to inform readers that this may not be for everyone.

I loved every book better than the previous one, which is so rare. I love how the books put women’s history in context, conveyed their struggles, leveraged real primary documents within the fictional plot line, and how each romance is non-conventional. I cannot recommend this series enough!

Thomas Usher has a terrible gift. Following a car crash in which his wife and daughter are killed, he can see the recently departed, and it's not usually a pretty sight. When he is called to investigate the violent death of the daughter of a prominent local gangster, Usher's world is torn apart once more. For the barriers between this world and the next are not as immutable as once he believed.

Did Randall Flagg find his way into another book?
Reviewed: 09-03-21
To be clear, McMahon and Stephen King are very different writers altogether. However, it was as though Randall Flagg found another story line to take root and fester in, albeit on a much smaller less apocalyptic scale.
I didn’t know what to expect with this book. It is dark and has some very disturbing subject matters, but overall was surprised and enjoyed it. Recommended for those that can stomach the macabre.

Predictable, but good for a free book
Reviewed: 01-05-21
This is my second Holohan. Both were predictable very early on but I stuck with them to see if I was wrong. There usually was some little surprise to my prediction, but nothing major. But I don’t want to give it a bad review. It was free and kept me entertained while I painted my living room.

Good, a bit graphic, but more substance than 50 Shades
Reviewed: 12-29-20
It’s a little dark but these characters have backstory that I think actually resembles “normal people” and their struggles in social contexts. Just be aware of the graphic sexual nature of this book; if that’s not for you, then steer clear.

It was alright
Reviewed: 12-24-20
I wish I could accurately capture why I wasn’t crazy about the storyline but did listen to the whole book. Full grown upper class adults mirroring behaviors of high schoolers with a “who dunnit” component missed the mark. But I hung on to see it through the end and if it would surprise me. It was not bad, just not great either.
