I think this book has changed me. Truly. I'm not really big on history, but, especially in these past 4 years, have seen the need to remember history and know more intimately the sacrifices that have been made to more fully understand where we are today as a country. I feel like I will have a hard time transitioning back to my daily life as my thoughts and heart are still deeply wrapped up in this story.

Story
Karol Charles does not have time for ghosts. It’s Christmas Eve and she’s at the office. Sure, her kids thought she’d be making cookies with them back at home, but this is important. This is what it means to “have it all.” Then, a familiar cough from the adjacent room jolts her out of her work. It can’t be possible. Marley is dead. She has been for years.

When Elizabeth Bennet first knew Mr. Darcy, she despised him and was sure he felt the same. Angered by his pride and reserve, influenced by the lies of the charming Mr. Wickham, she never troubled herself to believe he was anything other than the worst of men - until, one day, he unexpectedly proposed. Mr. Darcy's passionate avowal of love causes Elizabeth to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about him.

The voices sounded exactly like they do in the pride and prejudice movie with Keira Knightley. It was so refreshing to listen to a romance where there was such respect and maturity between the main characters. I haven't read any other "pride and prejudice retellings" just the original, but I loved all the added conversations and romance in this.

Strong female without being overly disrespectful to the male love interest. (Which I appreciate) She has talents but still obviously the men are stronger than her which is realistic which I appreciate as well. The "woman power" theme doesn't go overboard. Fun, sweet, humorous and flirty. One of my favorites! Just listened for the fourth time in the past 2 years!

Best series I've ever read/heard.
Reviewed: 10-17-22
This series is just wow. I have the physical books that I have read multiple times and then bought the audiobooks years ago. I just listened through book one and two again for probably the 10th time. The story was just so good and I've never really cared much about history (even though I know I should more and am caring more as I grow older) So because of this I think every single time I would skim/skip over a lot of the historical stuff in these. It was very hard for me to stick with it and "get to the good part" The first time I read them. IT IS SO WORTH IT!!! This time I listen to every single word. I cry so much every time I listen! But most of all, this book encourages me and challenges me to be a better Christian. I'm so thankful for Francine Rivers and how her books have encouraged me. I feel in this series she does such a beautiful job of exposing the consequences of sin and trusting in God's omnipotence and sovereignty.
I am mostly a sucker for a good clean romance, and most of the time just get annoyed when they want to "shove Jesus down my throat" (coming from a super Jesus loving gal!) But I think the reason it always annoys me is because it's always very fluffy and surface level. But Francine Rivers definitely does not do fluffy and surface level. Blah I could blab on forever. But I just love love LOVE This series.

This is my favorite type of romance: quick witty humor, deep/real personal pasts that almost get in the way but not in an annoying "come ooooon already" sort of way. Also loooove romances (appropriate ones like this one) where it's just the love interest characters stories, I get bored when they develop the side characters too much lol.
This book was absolutely delightful and just perfectly checked all my boxes for what I love in a historical romance!

Story
When Persephone Lancaster receives a marriage proposal from the ill-tempered Duke of Kielder, she refuses - and then reconsiders. The obscene sum of money he's offering Persephone would save her family from ruin. With her characteristic optimism, she travels to the far reaches of Northumberland to wed a greatly feared stranger. Lodged deep in a thick forest infested with wild dogs, the Duke's castle is as cold and forbidding as the Duke himself, a man with terrible scars on his body and his soul.

I've been listening to a ton of audio books lately and this one has been my favorite!
I loved the humor of Adam's horrible moods and the exploration of his inner child that peeks through his fierce facade, and Persephone's courage and compassion with him. Basically a Beauty and the Beast story. I wish it had been a 12 hour listen instead of 8 with a few more sweet kisses/moments! Such a sweet story.
Narrator wasn't my all time favorite, but definitely close to the top of the list. She did great. All around great clean entertainment!

Loved it!!!

I loved it! I'm not into feminism stuff. I WANT the guy to sweep the girl off her feet! And I want the guy to be strong and handsome! But this had a strong and very capable woman who falls for a man who is humbly as strong and amazing in his own ways. No idea about the historical accuracy of the story (I think I saw other reviews negative about that) but I wouldn't know the difference and don't really care about that. It was a fun exciting "guy gets the girl" (duh..and as it should be haha) with lots of action along the way! Story and narrator were both great!! Also definitely had the God/coming back to God theme weaved in, without being preaching.
