Story
I'm a 64-year-old retired lawyer and former Assistant Attorney General with an unusual story to tell. Every word of it is true. It happened in a state park known as Devil's Den. For fear of losing my job and damaging my reputation in the legal community, I never spoke about the incident. If it hadn't happened to me, I'd be skeptical too. In 1977, I was an active duty NCO in the USAF. A friend and I planned a two-night camping trip to explore the wilderness. We drove deep into the forest until we came to a high plateau. There on the horizon sat a perfect triangle of three very bright stars....

Great story, horrible recording
Reviewed: 09-29-24
I really wish that the author used a commercial studio to do the recording. The entire book is full of pops and clicks. It's very distracting. In the section with his recollection of the hypnosis session, there are quite a few repeated words. Like he wasn't happy with the first reading so re-recorded, but didn't take the bad one out. It could have been so much better if he didn't cheap out on the recording.

Story
Longtime ATF agent Ken Croke had earned the right to coast to the end of a storied career, having routinely gone undercover to apprehend white supremacists, gun runners, and gang members. But after a chance encounter with an associate of the Pagan Motorcycle Gang created an opening, he transformed himself into “Slam,” a monstrous, axe-handle wielding enforcer whose duty was to protect the leadership “mother club” at all costs.

Outstanding story

It just amazes me that law enforcement can infiltrate a vicious gang and still retain their humanity. The story telling is awesome since the author was actually embedded in the gang. But he still retained his real self.
I listen to audio books on my commute. I often find that I sort from first making contact to being a full member of the gang, I was there the whole time. Not a second was missed.
A lot goes to the author, but the person reading the book was just as important. I've listened to dozens of books and often the story is there but the voice just doesn't seem to get it. Not so with this book. The voice kept me interested as well. This is one of the best Audible books I've listened to. Well worth the credit for the purchase.

This is just 1 title that I'm using to study for the exam. I'm about an hour into the book and there's been multiple times where a section of the book is read twice. I've also found some content that's just incorrect.
It's also kind of suspicious that there's exactly 50 reviews for this book and every one is a 5.0 rating. Every single reviewer thinks this is the perfect book.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Really fun "read"
Reviewed: 05-16-23
I saw this book mentioned in my suggested reads. I decided to give it a shot. I started playing it and was really annoyed that the narrator sounded like he was voicing a 1940's detective story. I decided to give it a shot and I'm really happy that I did. It's a really fun story.
Well worth the credit.

Court Gentry is known as The Gray Man—a legend in the covert realm, moving silently from job to job, accomplishing the impossible, and then fading away. And he always hits his target. But there are forces more lethal than Gentry in the world. And in their eyes, Gentry has just outlived his usefulness. Now, he is going to prove that for him, there's no gray area between killing for a living-and killing to stay alive.

Character is just ridiculous
Reviewed: 09-05-22
The star rating may give the wrong impression. This is a fun listen. Very much action packed. There's very little down time the whole way through.
The problem is the main character is 1 dimensional and pretty much indestructible. From leaping out of an airplane without a parachute, to taking on dozens of professional hit men, to losing a quarter of his blood, there's no way to kill this guy.
I'm just reviewing this to make sure that people know what they are getting. It's a lot of fun to listen and it's very action packed. Just keep in mind that it's not a literary classic.

love the stories, not the performance

I love these types of stories, but the performance was horrible. Throughout the book, the reader put a bunch of awkward pauses in place, like the middle of a sentence. made it really difficult to listen.

A podcast I listen to recommended this book. I'm so glad that I picked it up. It is the perfect audio book for me. There's plenty of humor, both mainstream and geeky humor. It's fun to hear about the various computing devices each of the wizards use. I remember using a lot of them.
It's a very fun read. The author determined what the rules for his universe were and he stuck to the rules. He didn't bend them to suit his needs.
As another reviewer said, there's some good sarcasm written into the book. Luke Daniels did a fantastic job putting the correct inflection into his voice to convey that sarcasm. He used different voices for each character and the voices matched the picture I had in my head for each character.
This is well worth the money and I'll pick up the next 2 books in the series once I get a chance.

Great story, up to the last chapter

Any additional comments?
I recently joined Audible to listen on my commute. I am sorely lacking in the "classic" literature that I've read so I decided to start mainly with the classics. I already bought the Kindle edition of this book, so got the audio version for a deep discount.
I was amazed at the talent that Upton Sinclair possessed. His writing paints a picture in my mind like no other author is able. I could see the killing floor of the plant. I could clearly see the house. I was amazed with the telling of this story. It's an incredible piece of literature and I can see why it's a classic. At least until the last chapter or so. At that point it turns into a lecture about the merits of socialism and the failings of capitalism. As long as you can overlook this, it's a wonderful book.
However, Casey Affleck is horrible in this book. There is very little change to the inflection in his voice and it is difficult to tell the difference between various characters. Throughout the book, it sounds like he's on the verge of tears. If not for the fantastic story her was reading, I'd have never finished listening to this book.
I do feel it's well worth the time and money to listen to this story.
