Story
In the last years of the dying Qing Empire, a courtesan is found frozen in a doorway. Her death is clouded by rumors of foxes, which are believed to lure people by transforming themselves into beautiful women and handsome men. Bao, a detective with an uncanny ability to sniff out the truth, is hired to uncover the dead woman’s identity. Since childhood, Bao has been intrigued by the fox gods, yet they’ve remained tantalizingly out of reach—until, perhaps, now.

Pick a different Book

Pretty terrible. I normally enjoy Mary Kay Andrew’s books but this one was not well written. The beginning was confusing and many times the story just didn’t make sense. Overall it was boring. Kathleen McInerney’s narration was the only saving grace.

Not just for YA
Reviewed: 11-11-21
I didn’t realize this was a YA read when I purchased it and glad I didn’t because I enjoyed it even though some parts were quite scary! Some of the romance part was annoying to me, but that’s probably because I’m in my 40’s. Overall, a good listen. Great narrator! Will definitely look for Nneka Okoye again!

Story
Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, enjoys more freedom as a widow than she did as a wife. After an obligatory year spent mourning her philandering husband, Reggie, she puts aside her drab black gowns, leaving the countryside and her money-grubbing in-laws behind. With her young daughter in tow, Frances rents a home in Belgravia and prepares to welcome her sister, Lily, arriving from New York - for her first London season.

Pick a different title from Mary Kay Andrews. This book had terrible character development and wasn’t believable even for a beach read.
